eva-maria klingovsky
Hello there, my name is eva.
In my tiny studio in vienna i am working on quirky
crochet creatures and sweet amigurumi dolls and write
down their patterns, so that even Crochet beginners can
make their own.

You might know me already from the Notorious Nonos

Crochetgang, which was created to remind us, that
sometimes it is ok to say NO loud and clear. The German
version of the book was self published in 2018, an
english version is coming soon.

• Stuffing (natural fill / polyester fiberfill) • Pins for sewing

The right yarn Sometimes kids don‘t treat their stuffed animals with the necessary care.
Make sure to use washable materials to keep your dolls and animals easy to clean. I highly
recommend naturally dyed, organic yarn like cotton.

Stuffing Of course you can use natural materials like cherry pit to stuff your NONOs with,
but please be aware that these are sometimes not washable. According to my experience,
Polyfill is the most suitable. You can purchase it at any local craft store or at online stores and
platforms like Etsy or Hobbylobby.

The right hook For Amigurumis I use a hook that is at least 1/2 or even 1 size smaller
than suggested for the particular yarn. This makes sure your doll or animal will be strong,
sturdy and safe for children to play with, and there are no gaps making the stuffing shine
through.

My personal yarn suggestion Scheepjes Catona (100% cotton, suggested hook

size 3 mm). This yarn was used for all patterns in this book.
AMIGURUMI TIPS
Adjusting the size
You can adjust the size of your creations by using a heavier yarn or wool. Don‘t forget to adjust
the hook size, too. Be aware that making your NONOs bigger and taller will also increase the
amount of yarn you will need.

Stuff it well
Your doll does not look as good as in the book? Very often, the problem is with the stuffing. If you
don‘t stuff it firmly, your creation will turn out all flabby and limp. The more stuffing you use, the
more stability your doll will have.

Assembly
Use fixing pins to mark the exact position of each detail you want to embroider or attach. Don‘t
forget to remove all pins after sewing the parts together. You don‘t want to get anybody hurt!

Bendable Arms and legs

Use florist wire, crafting wire or pipe cleaner to make the legs and arms of your doll bendable.
Please note that it might not be washable any more and should also not be given to small children
because of a high risk of injury.

Crocheting in SPirals, rounds or rows

Amigurumi can be crocheted in normal rounds or in continuous, spiraling rounds. All of the
patterns in this book are crocheted in continuous rounds, unless stated otherwise.
Closed rounds: each round is closed with a slip stitch into the 1st st of the next round. The next
round starts with a chain, which replaces the first sc of the next round.

Spiraling rounds: simply „ignore“ the end of each round and continue crocheting seamlessly

around without any transition. With this technique I highly recommend to use stitch markers.
TECHNIQUES
Since our patterns were written by 16 different designers from all over the world, and techiques and habits
may vary from country to country, it was not easy to find a collective „language“ for all of our creations. The
following abbreviations and techniques should bring you through the whole book. See details on the following
pages for more amigurumi tips & tricks.

PLEASE HELP FINDING ERRORS!

Of course we tested all patterns in this book several times and crocheted all of them with the suggested yarn
and materials. Still, it is very easy for some errors slipping in, and we are sure, you will find one here or there.

Please help us improving our patterns and books by telling us about these mistakes and errors. Therefore,
write to hello@polaripop.com or feel free to contact any of our 16 designers directly on their Instagram or
Facebook profile, or join us in our Facebook group Polaripop‘s Elves to get in contact.
Increases / Decreases

Any inc in this book should be taken as a sc-inc automatically, as well as any dec should always be
understood as a sc-dec. Any time that we are talking about a different kind of increase or decrease, we will
state that extra in the pattern. Examples for other increases are:

hdc-inc half double crochet increase = 2 hdc into 1 stitch

dc-inc double crochet increase = 2 dc into 1 stitch
tc-inc treble crochet increase = 2 tc into 1 stitch

Normal vs. invisible decreases

Use this technique to make your decreases as invisible as possible, especially suitable for heads and round
shapes. Unfortunately you will not be able this hidden decreases if your doll is crochted into BLO or FLO. In
this case simply use normal decreases.

Normal decrease: insert into next Invisible increase: Insert into FLO This makes your decreases
st, yarn over, pull through, insert of next st, insert into FLO next st, almost invisible. Shift the
into next st, yarn over, pull yarn over, pull through 2, pull decreases in the next round to
through. Pull through 2, pull through 2. keep the round shape of your toy.
through 2 omce more.

Front loops / Back loops

Depending on the pattern we usually crochet in spiraling rounds when we create an amigurumi doll. Somtimes
in this book we will also use the technique of crocheting into back loops or front loops for a few rounds to
get a certain effect like a nice color blend or a naturally shaped neck. This will be stated in the pattern.
Yarning off invisibly

Use this technique to create a nice and smooth invisible joint on the last round of your amigurumi.

The magic ring

Use the magic ring or magic circle to begin your amigurumi with an invisible start, especially on 3-dimensional
shapes like heads and bodies. If the magic ring is not for you, simply chain 4 and close to a circle with a slst
into the first chain. You can now crochet your first round into the newly created ring.

Make a loop like shown, ch1. Crochet 1st round into the ring. Pull starting thread to close whole.

Changing colors

To make the different yarn colors of your amigurumi doll blend well, use this method of invisible color change.
Prepare 1 stitch BEFORE the 1st stitch in the new color. Insert your hook into the next stitch and pull through
the old yarn. Then yarn over with the new color and pull through to finish your stitch.
Stitchmarkers

To mark the first stitch of your new round, add a

stitchmarker. Attention: stitchmarkers for knitting are
not suitable for crocheting, because they cannot be
opened. Save money and plastic like me and use
some colored yarn scraps instead of stitchmarkers.

Weaving in yarn ends

I guess it is self-evident, that we secure all yarn tails

before finishing our amigurumi doll. If you want to add
some extra security for your kids, also weave in the
starting yarn at the beginning. This is much easer to
do once you finished a few rounds or rows before.

Safety EYes

Safety eyes are available in various sizes, shapes and

styles in your local craft store and online. They can be
quite expensive, but still I recommend that you do not
save at the wrong end here. Small children tend to put
almost anything in their mouth, and they will definitely
chew on small parts sticking out of their doll. If you
wanna be on the save side, you can also embroider
eyes, cheeks and noses with some yarn scraps instead.

Close a round shape

Close round or oval shapes with this easy trick. No

joint or seam will be visible. Take a sewing needle and
weave the yarn tail of your shape through all front
loops of your last round, from outside to inside. To
close the whole, pull yarn end carefully. Weave in the
remaining yarn tails.
Surface Slipstitches

Surface slipstitches give you a nice 3-dimensional effect. Used mostly as a decorative element.

Pull new yarn throug stitch. Pull through next stitch again, This is how your surface slip
then use the 2 loops for a slst. stitches should look like.

Reverse single Crochet

Reverse single crochet stitches are crocheted exactly like normal single crochet stitches, but instead of going
from right to left, we now crochet from left to right.

Attach yarn, 1 sc into same stitch Insert 1 stitch to the right. Finish like a normal sc stitch.

Front post double crochet

Front post double crochet stitches are mostly used for skirts and dresses, wigs or decorational items,
because they create a nice, structured surface. There is also a back post double crochet, but we do not need
this for the patterns in this book.

We do not crochet INTO the dc Insert hook from right side, yarn Finish like a normal double crochet
from the last round, but AROUND it. over and pull through on the back stitch. It leaves you with a nice
of your work. 3-dimensional effect.
