Abstract

Suicide is a complex and multifaceted issue that has become a significant

concern in educational institutions around the world. This research paper aims to
examine the prevalence and underlying factors contributing to the suicide cases
in Guimaras State University (GSU) a renowned educational institution in the
Philippines. By utilizing a mixed-methods approach this study investigates the
demographic characteristics, psychological factors and institutional support
systems that may influence suicidality among GSU students. The findings
highlight the need for proactive and comprehensive suicide prevention strategies
within the university setting.

Introduction

Suicide is a global public health issue that affects individuals from all walks of life
including students in educational institutions. According to the World Health
Organization (WHO) suicide is the second leading cause of death among
individuals aged 15 to 29 years old (WHO 2021). Guimaras State University
located in the Visayas region of the Philippines has not been immune to this
alarming trend. In recent years the university has witnessed a concerning
increase in suicide cases among its student population. This research paper

Methods

To investigate the suicide cases in Guimaras State University a mixed-methods

approach was utilized. Quantitative data was collected through a survey
administered to GSU students focusing on demographic information, mental
health status and perceived institutional support. Qualitative data was obtained
through in-depth interviews with selected students who had experienced suicidal
ideation or attempted suicide. The data collection process adhered to ethical
guidelines ensuring participant confidentiality and informed consent.

Presentation of Data/ Findings

The analysis of the quantitative data revealed several noteworthy findings. Firstly
the prevalence of suicidal ideation among GSU students was alarmingly high
with 68% reporting having experienced thoughts of self-harm. Furthermore 68%
of respondents reported a lack of awareness regarding available mental health
resources within the university. This suggests a need for improved dissemination
of information regarding support services.
The qualitative data provided valuable insights into the underlying factors
contributing to the suicide cases in GSU. Themes that emerged from the
interviews included academic pressure relationship issues, financial stress and a
lack of emotional support. Many students expressed feelings of hopelessness
and perceived a lack of empathy from their peers and university staff.

Discussion

The findings of this study emphasize the importance of addressing the

multifaceted nature of suicide within the university setting. Academic pressure in
particular emerged as a significant factor contributing to suicidality among GSU
students. The competitive nature of the education system coupled with high
expectations from both parents and society places immense stress on students
potentially leading to mental health issues. Furthermore the lack of awareness
and accessibility to mental health resources within the university exacerbates the
problem.

Conclusion

The increasing number of suicide cases in Guimaras State University

necessitates urgent action to prevent further tragedies. This research paper has
shed light on the underlying factors contributing to suicidality among GSU
students including academic pressure, relationship issues, financial stress and a
lack of emotional support. It is imperative for the university to implement
proactive measures such as mental health awareness campaigns, counseling
services and stress management programs. By fostering a supportive and
inclusive environment GSU can mitigate the risk of suicide among its student
population.
