INTRODUCTION

Adolescence is a critical period in an individual’s life that is characterized by significant

physical, emotional, and psychological changes. One of the significant issues faced by
adolescents is the need for sexual and reproductive health education, including the importance
of using contraceptives to prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
San Isidro National High School, like many other schools in the Philippines, faces the challenge
of providing comprehensive sexual education to its students. This research fill the gap in the
current knowledge regarding the use of contraceptives among selected senior high school
students. Previous studies have shown that adolescent pregnancies remain a significant public
health issue in the Philippines, and this can be attributed to inadequate sexual education and
the lack of access to contraceptives. This study aims to contribute to the existing literature by
providing valuable insights into the factors that influence the use of contraceptives among senior
high school students. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the significance of using
contraceptives among selected senior high school students in San Isidro National High School.
The main findings of this research provide an overview of the factors that influence the use of
contraceptives among senior high school students in San Isidro National High School. This
study aims to identify the use of contraceptives, the level of awareness and knowledge of
students about contraception, and the attitudes of students towards the use of contraceptives.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to World Health Organization (WHO) 2017 estimates, 214 million women of
reproductive age in developing regions have an unmet need for contraception. Reasons for this
include: limited access to contraception, limited choice of methods, fear or experience of side-
effects, cultural or religious opposition, poor quality of available services. Nowadays, unintended
pregnancies for teenagers are increasing because they may lack knowledge about the
importance of the use of contraceptives. The Senior High School years are a critical period in
the lives of young people, as they transition into adulthood and face new challenges and
responsibilities. One of the most pressing issues that they may encounter is sexual and
reproductive health. With the increasing availability of information and technology, Senior High
School students are more exposed to sexual content and are at risk of engaging in sexual
activities at an early age. It is crucial for selected senior high school students in San Isidro
National High School to know the significance of using contraceptives because it can prevent
unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. These can have negative
consequences on their lives, such as dropping out of school, financial strain, and mental health
issues. The level of awareness and knowledge of selected senior high school students in San
Isidro National High School about contraceptives is low because they are not acknowledging the
significance of thinking about the consequences of being involved sexual activities.

Unintended pregnancies are increasing among teenagers due to their lack of knowledge
about the importance of using contraceptives. This can lead to negative consequences such as
dropping out of school, financial strain, and mental health issues, which can impact their lives
significantly. Senior high school students face challenges in accessing and using contraceptives
due to limited access, a limited choice of methods, fear or experience of side-effects, cultural or
religious opposition, poor quality of available services, and gender-based barriers. Unplanned
pregnancies and STIs can have negative consequences on the health and well-being of young
people, such as infertility, chronic pain, and an increased risk of contracting HIV. These
consequences can impact their lives significantly. The use of contraceptives can help prevent
unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortion, STIs, and HIV transmissions to newborns by reducing
rates of these negative consequences. This can also benefit the education of girls and create
opportunities for women to participate more fully. There are several types of birth control
methods or strategies used to prevent pregnancy, such as the implant, condoms, intrauterine
devices (IUDs), and pills. The implant is a long-acting form of birth control that can last for up to
three years, while condoms are a barrier method of birth control that can also protect against
STIs. IUDs come in two types – hormonal and non-hormonal, and they can last for several
years. Pills are oral contraceptives that contain hormones and can be taken daily or for 21 days,
followed by a week of rest from pill before taking another box of it.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The problem addressed in this study is the significance of using contraceptives among
Senior High School students in San Isidro National High School (SINHS), considering the risks
of unintended pregnancies and STIs that they may face due to their increasing exposure to
sexual content and activities.

Specifically, the study aims that answer these questions

• How important it is for the selected senior high school students in San Isidro National
High School to know the significance of using contraceptives "
• What is the level of awareness and knowledge of selected senior high school students in
San Isidro National High School about contraceptives?
• Why are unintended pregnancies increasing among teenagers, and how does this affect
their lives?
• What challenges do SHS students face in accessing and using contraceptives?
• What are the negative consequences of unplanned pregnancies and STIs, and how do
they impact the health and well-being of young people?
• How can the use of contraceptives help prevent unintended pregnancies, unsafe
abortion, STIs, and HIV transmissions to newborns?
• What are the types of birth control methods or strategies used to prevent pregnancy?
