THE PROBLEM

Statement of the Problem

This study is conducted to determine the differences between male and female
5.1

attitudes towards STEM among STEM senior high school students in University of Cebu – Main

during first semester of SY: 2022-2023

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the gender distribution of the respondents?

2. What are the respondents’ attitudes towards STEM in terms of:

2.1 Science;

2.2 Mathematics;

2.3 Engineering;

2.4 Technology

2.5 Science-Mathematics- Engineering-Technology; and

2.6 Career?

3. Is there a significant difference between male and female respondents’

attitudes towards STEM?

Statement of the Null Hypothesis

5.2

At 0.05 level of significance, the following hypothesis will be tested:

Ho: There is no significant relationship between male and female respondents’ attitudes

towards STEM.
6.1

Significance of the Study

6.2

The results of this study will be highly beneficial to the following entities:
6.3

Students. As the focus of this research, the findings will inform students how gender

differences affect students’ attitudes towards STEM strand.

Parents. As the primary supervisor of their children, parents will be aware of how gender
6.4
differences affect their children’s attitude towards STEM strand. Through this study, the parents
6.5

will be able to identify the different attitudes of their children towards STEM.

Teachers. The findings of this study may provide teachers with ideas on how students’

gender differences affect their attitudes towards STEM strand and identify the different attitudes
6.6
of male and female students.

Academic Leaders. The output of this study can be used as a resource by academic

leaders to put into place efficient plans for the benefit of the students. 6.7

School Guidance Counselors. The findings of this study may serve as the basis for

developing intervention programs to help male and female students assess their attitudes towards

STEM. Also, identify the different attitudes of male and female students.

Future Researchers. The generated information from this study will act as a manual or

source of information for future researchers to carry out additional studies in fields with a similar

focus.
Scope and Delimitation
7.1
This quantitative study will focus on determining the relationship between male

and female attitudes towards STEM among STEM senior high school students in University of

Cebu – Main during first semester of SY: 2022-2023. Due to the limited face to face7.2
classes, this

study will apply a stratified sampling procedure by selecting thirty (30) respondents, specifically,

fifteen (15) men and fifteen (15) women Grade 12 STEM students. Additionally, the study will

focus on male and female students’ attitudes towards STEM concerning to science, Mathematics,

Engineering, Technology, Science-Mathematics-Engineering-Technology, career,

7.3

Furthermore, the gender of the students will be limited only to if they are female or

male. While the male and female students’ attitudes will be measured through STEM Attitude

Scale for Secondary School Students by Benek and Ackay (2019). A 5-point Likert scale that

measures the attitude of students towards STEM.
