Course Title HCIN 559 – Management of Health Care System Quality Outcomes and Patient

Safety
Course Project Delayed Sepsis Detection and Treatment: A Prospective Solution
Competency Quality and Regulatory

For the project that was at the end of my course that focused on quality and safety, I decided to

complete a project on a clinical decision support tool that would assist in the detection and treatment of

sepsis in hospitalized patients. This project required that I review the literature to gain an understanding

of a problem in the healthcare industry. Once a problem was identified, I then proposed a solution that

operated in a clinical decision-support fashion. I performed a failure mode analysis on the proposed

solution and suggested solutions to prospective problems that could arise from the solution being

implemented. Once these solutions were investigated, a proposed quality measurement plan was planned

to ensure success. By the end of the project, I was able to suggest a solution that I felt had a high potential

for success.

Because I was able to identify a solution to the problem, it encouraged me to understand how

informatics tools can operate in a way that is integrated into clinical workflows to improve patient care.

As part of the project, I prioritized patient privacy and was able to suggest a solution that revealed

pertinent patient data only to the appropriate clinicians. Ethical principles were considered, and patient

information was safeguarded as part of the project. I also made sure to develop a plan to measure success

so quality improvement could truly be gauged. I also considered employee feedback to measure the

perceived success among the interdisciplinary team. By allowing me to identify a problem, explore a

solution, suggest how that solution could be implemented, and assess how quality improvement could be

measured the project facilitated my satisfaction of the Quality and Regulatory Competency.
