MF-J20
History of the Design
The J-20 design concept was first
implemented into the MF-1 Wolverine design.
Seeing the results it produced, Colby (the
Designer) finalized the CAD drawings with
Marshall in the Fall 2012 semester. The plane
went through build tests to get the desired
look seen to the left. Final design was created
after successful maiden flights. Please see the
BASIC SPECS maiden flight and build video by visiting our
website at www.mesarcfoamfighters.com .
WINGSPAN: 33 inches
LENGTH: 41 inches
WEIGHT: 20 to 25 Ounces Description
CENTER OF GRAVITY: See Bottom Fuselage Piece The J-20 design was created by 8th grade
TOP SPEED: 40mph to 80+ (Depending on Power System) MESArcFF Season 3 student Colby Struckman.

Recommended Parts Colby wanted to change the current standard

foam fighter fuselage to one that is more
MOTOR: 2212/6 or Higher Brushless Outrunner aerodynamic, more design appealing, and
ESC: 30 AMP or Higher Brushless ESC helps with the overall lift of the main wing.
PROP: APC 6x4 Having some practice with the MF-1
Battery: 2100mAH 3S (30C or Higher Lipo) Wolverine, Colby has transformed the design
Servos: 2 Metal Gear to look like the Chinese Fighter Jet called the
Radio and Receiver: Any 4-channel or better (2.4ghz J-20. The aircraft has oversized wings,
preferred) stabilizers, and small control surfaces to give
any beginner flyer the best chance for maiden
flights.

Motor Mount Configuration

The motor mount can be constructed in a way that fits your preferences. Below is simply instruction on a “How to” if
you have not constructed a motor mount for your power system.

Upper and Lower Stabilizer Angles

Angles of stabilizers can vary a little. See
the diagram to the left for the precise
70 Degrees angles.

·This is a design template for a high performance, high speed RC aircraft. This plane should only be built and flown by
experienced Pilots with adequate skill to fly fast, maneuverable planes.
·DO NOT fly this plane where it can endanger people, livestock or property.
·ANY PERSONS DECIDING TO BUILD AND FLY THIS PLANE DOES SO AT HIS/HER OWN RISK AND LIABILITY. MESA
RCFOAMFIGHTERS ASSUMES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS PLANE.
·This plane should only be launched via the side launch method. Do not attempt to launch from the top or bottom of
the fuselage. Doing so can cause EXTREME BODILY HARM if any hand or body part comes into contact with the fast
spinning propeller.
·All minors should fly under the supervision of an adult or guardian.

About the MESA rcFoam Fighters

The MESArcFF program is unique in that it applies STEM based skills through the use of Scratch Build Remote Control Aircraft, it
is the only MESA program in the state that has this kind of curriculum in practice. Students learn and study the physics of flight
such as hydrofoils, aerodynamics, center of gravity, drag, lift, and thrust. Students’ mathematical skills are applied by use of
measurement as well as science skills through the use of RC electronics. The creative opportunity is endless and the boost of
confidence is insurmountable when the maiden flight of students' creations is a success. Students conduct international
communication through their YouTube channel with engineers across the world, helping them perfect their ideas and
projects. The MESA rcFoam Fighters program continues to grow each year, attracting over 100 students in Season 3 of its
creation. Due to the program's success, there are schools across the nation wanting to adopt the curriculum of scratch build
aviation. The MESArcFF program is currently working on how to get this curriculum out to schools so they can continue to
grow this concept of applying Math, Engineering, and Science by use of Scratch Build Remote Control Aviation.
