1. Shaq was many things in his life: Basketball player, rapper, sports announcer,
movie star, and ad spokesperson
2. Buick is many things: luxury, fuel efficient, stylish, and size efficient cars.
3. The commercial’s theme could be very vague: Shaq proving you could save
money on good cars.
4. A reason why Buick used Shaq as a spokesperson could be because he’s funny,
and can make anything, even serious things funny. Buick probably used him to
appeal to the people who know him and are looking for cars.
5. The commercial wants from the audience, the pathos of humor. When Shaq
points at the camera, and the song starts, on cue, it makes you smile, and laugh,
because Shaq is funny. The point of the pathos injection is to feel, not
obligated, but feel likely to buy what he endorses.
6. On a logical level, the ad desires from the audience, a want to buy what Shaq
has, a Buick that is luxurious, and fuel efficient. The car is even luxurious, even
for the man, the myth, the legend, Shaq. The logical path provides a need for
someone to look into buying a car.
In Buick’s ad, we see Shaq, the towering giant of basketball, approach his majestic metallic
chariot. The legend fits in the car, even though he is a giant. The ad uses him to endorse their
vehicles, for the appeal. In Shaq’s ad, he highlights the fuel efficiency, the luxury, and the size,
making the joke, “I’ve had shoes bigger than most hybrids.” Shaq highlights the size, and
luxury the most, proving the fact that he could fit in there. Buick entices its audience by using
the fame factor, with Shaq endorsing the cars, like one does for sports drinks. The ad utilizes
Shaq’s fame to endorse a product, and uses it effectively.
The ad’s meaning can be viewed through 3 parts: the ethos of Shaq, the pathos he induces,
and the logos of what he says about Buick. The ethos of Shaq includes; he was a famous
basketball player, and was so well known. Shaq says in the ad, “I may have retired from the
game, but not from being big. ” This shows that Shaq is 7’ 1”, and even though he’s no longer
a basketball player, he still has the height of his glory days. Shaq invokes in all of us a feeling
of nostalgia, from his basketball days, “. . . Nice, because I have shoes that are bigger than
most hybrids and more stylish, too. ” He reminds us that he is large, and enhances the luxury
of the car, by evoking a sense of nostalgia, from seeing his height, in basketball, fit in the
Buick. The feelings evoked are essential to ads. The ad also evokes the logos of what Shaq is
saying, highlighting the car’s fuel efficiency, and luxury. Shaq says, “Good thing one car
gives me full-size luxury and 36 miles per gallon. The car’s efficiency is important because it
strengthens Shaq’s ethos and the car’s appeal. The ad’s language utilizes all three in efficient
ways.
