Note: Numerical models that are based on MODFLOW, and associated programs, are not
compatible with MacOS, it is necessary to use PCs. Windows virtual partitions can only be used if
you are very experienced in IT management of your computer.

A. Graphical User Interface ModelMuse and MODFLOW6

1. Download and install ModelMuse v5.1 (https://water.usgs.gov/water-

resources/software/ModelMuse/index.html).

2. Launch ModelMuse, when you are asked “What do you want to do?” select “Create a new
MODLFOW model” and “Next”.
3. Go ahead selecting “Next” and “Finish” leaving everything as default.
4. The main ModelMuse window opens. By installing the Graphical User Interface, the
necessary modelling codes (MODFLOW, MT3DMS, etc.) are NOT set up and must be
downloaded separately. Go to Model | MODFLOW Program locations… as shown below.

5. Go to the MF6 page, click on “View software release” and download the ZIP file

6. Unzip the folder and copy it directly in C:\mf6 or create a dedicated folder with a very short
path (for example C:\EXE\mf6)
7. Get back to ModelMuse and browse the path to the executable file of MODFLOW
…\mf6\bin\mf6.exe
8. Go to the MODPATH v7 page, download and unzip the software; update the path in the same
way as for MF6.

B. Set up of PEST in ModelMuse

1. Go to the PEST homepage – Download - Programs https://pesthomepage.org/programs

2. Download the zip file indicated in the figures (PEST, PEST_HP, GW utilities, PLPROC):

3. Unzip and copy the whole content of each folder (many exe files!) inside the folder pest17.

4. Copy the pest17 folder in a short path position, for instance C:\PEST17 or C:\EXE\PEST17
5. Brow the PEST path in the ModelMuse dialog

C. Run check

In order to be sure that everything is correctly setup:

1. Download the test model Test.gbp and save it in C:\TEST

2. Go to File | Export | MODFLOW 6 Input Files…

3. Create input files and run MODFLOW and MODPATH at once. Close ModelMonitor, close the
mfsim.lst file and the test.lst file and press any key to close the command window.

4. Inspect the C:\TEST folder. You should see 74 items

5. Open the Test.pst file, that should look like the picture.

6. Go back to ModelMuse, File | Export | PEST | Export PEST Control File, overwrite, save the new
Test.pst file and run PESTCHEK. Close the command window.

7. Go again to File | Export | PEST | Export PEST Control File, overwrite, save the new Test.pst file and
run PEST. Wait until finished (approx. 10 mins).

8. Inspect the C:\TEST folder. You should see 104 items

9. Open the Test.res file; it should look like the picture

10. Go back to ModelMuse and see the scatterplot of measured vs modelled heads. From Data | Data
Visualization… select PEST Observation results and upload the Test.res file.
