Chapter 6 Case Studies Questions and Answers

When an Instructor Moves Too Slowly

1. How else could Sean have adjusted to his instructor’s teaching style?
He could also anticipate what the professor might say next. Or maybe ask a specific
question on the topic if he got confused. In other terms, he needs to engage himself to the
lecture so that he would not doze off.
2. Should Sean respectfully communicate his concerns to his instructor? What would
be the benefits of doing so?
Yes, he should. Communicating with the instructor will clear your concern obviously. It
will make things flowing for you. Maybe that concern has become an obstacle for you
and you can't move on. It would also help your classmates who might have the same
concern as you but they're too shy to communicate with the instructor. It would also show
the instructor that you are paying attention to the class.
3. Course textbooks often come with online access codes that allow students to use
relevant study and practice materials that are not on the syllabus. How should a
student approach this material? Can it be helpful in mastering the course’s
material?
Even if it is not on the syllabus these online materials would help us in our studies. Some
have quizzes to test ourselves. Some also have case studies to see if you can comprehend
and apply what you have learned or maybe a preview for the lesson. All these things are
helpful in mastering the course.

Chapter 6 Review Questions

Objective Questions

1. Actively texting an old friend during a Medical Office Procedures lecture form of
active listening. False
2. Students who write notes by hand during a lecture generally remember more of
what was said than students using laptops. True
3. The best note-taking format for a lecture illustrating the similarities and differences
of two topics is Compare/contrast Note-taking Method
4. A good place to look for a course textbook’s outline of topics covered is course
summary.

Short-Answer Questions

1. List at least five behaviors that could be interfering with your ability to listen
actively in class.
Letting distractions interrupt your train of thought, allowing emotions to cloud your
thinking, concentrating on the speaker’s quirks, pretending to listen, and listening only
for facts and not ideas.
2. How would you cope with an instructor who moves too slowly?
Try and practice summarizing information in your head, force your brain t think.
Memorize definitions of key terms as the professor goes through them and predict the
information your instructor would cover next.
3. Which note-taking format would work best in a class where the instructor routinely
gives a lot of anecdotes and examples to illustrate a single main idea?
That would be the concept map note-taking format. You will be connecting ideas to the
main topic when doing a concept map.
4. What should you do with your class notes after you’ve written them in class?
Spend a few minutes reviewing them to make sure you understood and learned
something during the lecture. You can also compare your notes with your network
because they might have a different take on the topic, and it could probably be of help to
you.
5. What are the least three things you can do to make sure you’re reading actively?
Reading aloud, writing down effective notes, and make note of any difficult sections to
re-read.

Chapter 6 Applications

1. Group Exercise: Using a highlighter, read the first five pages of this chapter and
highlight important passages following the guidelines given in this chapter. Then go
back through these pages, looking only at what you have highlighted, and mark with
a large asterisk one key concept that would most likely be on a quiz covering this
chapter. Finally, get together in groups of three or four students and compare what
you have highlighted and marked with the asterisk. Talk about how you know what
is most important here.
a. The most important in my perspective is the technique LISAN and Learn. That is
because in my Anatomy and Physiology class, the lectures are all recorded, and I
must take notes of what the instructor is teaching. This will be on the test because
it is an important guideline for when we actively listen. And as proof for that, it
appeared on the test recently.
2. Analysis Exercise: Select a few pages of notes you took in one class session of a
different course at any time before reading this chapter. Examine these notes to see
how well they follow the guidelines suggested in the “Take Notes in Class” section of
this chapter. What could you have done differently to improve the process of taking
notes in class and the resulting notes?
a. My notes were almost following the suggested guidelines. I just didn’t have
personal application on some of them. If I was to do something differently, I
guess I would add more personal application and maybe a different note-taking
method. The method I’m using works best for me now, but it is kind of messy, but
I swear it’s organized. I just want to make it neat so I would not be disturbed by
how bad it looks.

9. Signal words can indicate transitions in a lecture, allowing you to organize your
thoughts and your notes.
10. The five steps of LISAN note taking are: Lead, Ideas, Signal Words, Actively Listen,
and Notes.
11. If your instructor writes a new concept or definition on the board or distributes a
handout with a diagram or list of facts, it would be wise to memorize that
information.
12. The system of writing in abbreviated words or symbols is called shorthand.
13. Knowing the origin of the subject makes it much easier to understand the material.
14. One of the last steps in active reading is reviewing the chapter summary.

Short Answer Questions

15. Name at least three of the five things you can do in class to become an active
listener.
We should avoid doing things that can distract us from listening because we have to
concentrate on the lecture. While listening, we should identify the main idea of the
lecture. Also make sure to pay attention to the instructor's transition cues.

16. List two ways that instructors may draw your attention to important material.
The instructor would repeat facts and/or definitions if it's important. He/she may also
gesture and facial expressions to draw the attention to key information.

17. Explain the difference between text-dependent and text-independent lecture content
and describe how you should approach the material for both types of lecture
content.
In a text-dependent lecture, it is ideal to bring our textbook each time there is a class.
Highlight and annotate passages or definitions the instructor reads aloud. Cross out
information the instructor mentions that is unimportant. In a text-independent, make sure
to take effective notes during the lecture hours. Review the notes after class to make sure
you understood the material. Discuss with classmates and take turns teaching the
material. You may also use supplementary materials.

18. Why might an instructor use media, such as handouts, films, or plastic models, as
part of a class lecture?

topic. It can also be a review for you if you have learned the material because you have to
connect the media to the material you have learned recently or previously.
19. List three benefits of taking notes during class.
Notes can provide memory cues to help us review and study the information covered.
Lecture notes show what materials are considered important by the instructor. It also
helps you stay focused and engaged during the lecture.
20. Describe the purpose of a note-taking outline.
Outlines act as a guideline about the lesson. It also gives you a very organized notes
especially when the instructor strictly follows their own outline and very organized
lectures. Note-taking outline will keep us on track of what we are doing.
21. Name and describe two of the four common note-taking formats.
Asymmetrical columns: Allows plenty of room to write comments, questions, or
reminders next to the lecture notes. Compare/contrast: Gives an easy way of looking at
how two different concepts are different with each other.
22. Explain why it is important to read assigned material before the class session.
Reading assigned material before the lass session will help you be prepared for the
lecture. You will be able to understand the lecture easily and add more to what you
already know. You will also be able to point out to your instructor what you do not
understand in the assigned reading.
23. List two strategies for reading actively.
Reading the passage aloud so that you can hear the words of the text in your head. Write
down any questions you have about any confusing concepts and/or ideas.
24. Explain the six steps of creating a note-taking outline.
The six steps include the following: Looking at the general layout of the chapter, reading
the introductory paragraph, reviewing graphs, charts, or diagrams, searching for italic and
bold words, looking over passages you highlighted, and reading the close paragraph.
Writing out the general layout will help you see the size of each sections for your outline,
the introductory paragraph often has the lists of main ideas, graphs, charts, diagrams are
related to the topic so analyze it, bold and italic words are word cues that could possibly
be important or maybe it is a new vocabulary you need to learn and know, and the closing
paragraph usually summarizes important information and the conclusion.
