Versailles, in France, is a magnificent palace built for Louis XIV. Work began in 1661 and carried on for century.
Versailles is 500m long, had over 1300 major rooms and accommodate 500 people.
The first architect was Louis le Vau, but Jules Hardoun-Mansart took over in 1676, adding the second storey.
The interior was conceived by Charles le Brun. His Hall of Mirrors is a long hall lined with mirrors. A masterly painted
ceiling shows Louis XIV‟s achievements. Throughout Versailles high ceiling and great doors are emblazoned in gold
with the mark of the sun god, Apollo and also that of King Louis, known as the Sun King.
The huge garden of tree-lined terraces and ponds were landscaped by Andre le Notre with 1400 fountains, 400
new pieces of sculptures, and four millions tulips. The gardens at Versailles have been enlarged several times and
now cover nearly 101 hectares. Planting, fountains, and statues are arranged in geometrical patterns. The fountains
appear magically still to show the power of the king over nature.
During the French Revolution on 6th October 1789, mobs invaded the palace and wrecked its interiors.

Thousands of macaques are bred or captured from the wild to be used as street performers, or known
as “topeng monyet”. The macaques are used to perform street shows; wearing funny masks, riding
bicycles, performing acrobatic moves and doing amusing things. However, such shows should be banned
for few reasons.
First, topeng monyet is a kind of exploitation of monkeys for money. The monkeys are hung from
chains for long periods to train them to walk on their hind legs like humans. Their teeth are extracted so
they can‟t bite and they are tortured to remain obedient. The monkeys are often outfitted in dresses and
cowboy hats and forced to carry parasols or ride tiny bikes. This animal abuse will definitely hurt the
monkeys.
Second, the ban of masked monkey show can help improve public order. Topeng monyet is often
performed when traffic is backed up at notoriously congested intersections. This will disturb the sight and
create traffic jams for many motorists or pedestrians will slow down to watch the shows.
Third, banning the dancing monkeys is a necessary public health measure. It is important to rescue
the monkeys from street performances and help prevent diseases carried by the monkeys.
The monkeys used in topeng monyet may not be healthy and may have potential to some diseases
such as tuberculosis and hepatitis.
Considering the reasons stated above, topeng monyet can be banned for it exploits the monkeys,
causes traffic jams and spreads illnesses such as tuberculosis and hepatitis.

25. How does the text likely benefit the readers?

A. It describes the exploitation of monkeys in masked monkey shows.
B. It informs the readers the effects of masked monkey exploitation.
C. It tells the readers why the masked monkey should be banned.

may be caused by topeng monyet.
D. Paragraph 2 describes the negative effects of dancing monkey when traffic; paragraph 5
describes health problem caused by dancing monkey.
E. Both paragraphs are about the way how macaques are exploited for topeng monyet

27. …. prevent diseases carried by the monkeys, banning the dancing monkey is considered to be
significant.

Obesity is a major global health epidemic that increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart
disease. Researchers from Flinders University, Australia, are studying a gene related to obesity,
RCAN1, which may allow you to eat as much as you want without gaining weight. The study used a
huge genetic screen in rodents to identify obesity-causing genetic candidates. When the gene RCAN1
was removed, the mice could feed on high fat foods for prolonged periods without gaining weight.
According to project leader and Professor Damien Keating, blocking RCAN1 helps transform
energy-storing white fat into energy-burning brown fat, meaning the body burns calories even while
resting and without the need for dietary restrictions or extra exercise. The international team said new
drug therapies could be developed based on the finding. Inhibiting the gene might also translate into
combating obesity and serious diseases such as diabetes.
“We are currently testing a series of protein-targeting drugs to see if they inhibit RCAN1 and
whether they represent potential new anti-obesity drugs,” Keating said. Two-thirds of Australian adults
and a quarter of children are either overweight or obese, yet left with limited effective therapeutic
treatments. “We have research funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council. We
can potentially make a real difference in the fight against obesity,” Keating added.

TSUNAMI
Tsunami occurs when major fault under the ocean floor suddenly slips. The displaced rock pushes
water above it like a giant paddle, producing powerful water waves at the ocean surface. The ocean
waves spread out from the vicinity of the earthquake source and move across the ocean until they
reach the coastline, where their height increases as they reach the continental shelf, the part of the
earth crust that slopes, or rises, from the ocean floor up to the land.

A tsunami washes ashore with often disastrous effects such as severe flooding, loss of lives due to
drowning and damage to property.

A tsunami is a very large sea wave that is generated by a disturbance along the ocean floor. This
disturbance can be an earthquake, a landslide, or a volcanic eruption. A tsunami is undetectable far
out in the ocean, but once it reaches shallow water, this fast traveling wave grows very large.

The French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique thrive on their image as idyllic sun, sea and sand
destinations for tourists.
But few visitors are aware that these lush, tropical islands have a chronic pollution problem.
A pesticide linked to cancer - chlordecone - was sprayed on banana crops on the islands for two decades and
now nearly all the adult local residents have traces of it in their blood.
French President Emmanuel Macron has called it an "environmental scandal" and said the state "must take
responsibility". He visited Martinique last year and was briefed on the crisis on the islands, known in France as the
Antilles.
The French parliament is holding a public inquiry which will report its findings in December.
"We found anger and anxiety in the Antilles - the population feel abandoned by the republic," said Guadeloupe
MP Justine Benin, who is in charge of the inquiry's report.
"They are resilient people, they've been hit by hurricanes before, but their trust needs to be restored," she told
the BBC.
Large tracts of soil are contaminated, as are rivers and coastal waters. The authorities are trying to keep the
chemical out of the food chain, but it is difficult, as much produce comes from smallholders, often sold at the
roadside.
Drinking water is considered safe, as carbon filters are used to remove contaminants.
In the US a factory producing chlordecone - sold commercially as kepone - was shut down in 1975 after workers
fell seriously ill there. But Antilles banana growers continued to use the pesticide.
