tempted to play in the water. So they took off their clothes and jumped into the water. They swam together
happily. When, the party was almost over, the mother remembered her two children. She was desperate

She fell asleep after a long hour of crying. And she had a dream about her children. In her dream, she met an
old woman. The old woman told her, “Your children are in the pond near the party house. If you want to see
them, throw a handful of rice into the pond. Your children will appear.” As soon as she woke up, she quickly ran
to the pond. She also had a handful of rice in her hand. When she reached the pond, she threw the rice into the
pond and she called her children‟s names.
The dream was true! Two big fish with beautiful colors appeared in the pond. The mother cried when she saw

The text below is for questions number 28 – 30.
Obesity is a major global health epidemic that increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart
disease. Researchers from Flinders University, Australia, are studying a gene related to obesity,
RCAN1, which may allow you to eat as much as you want without gaining weight. The study used a
huge genetic screen in rodents to identify obesity-causing genetic candidates. When the gene RCAN1
was removed, the mice could feed on high fat foods for prolonged periods without gaining weight.
According to project leader and Professor Damien Keating, blocking RCAN1 helps transform
energy-storing white fat into energy-burning brown fat, meaning the body burns calories even while
resting and without the need for dietary restrictions or extra exercise. The international team said new
drug therapies could be developed based on the finding. Inhibiting the gene might also translate into
combating obesity and serious diseases such as diabetes.
“We are currently testing a series of protein-targeting drugs to see if they inhibit RCAN1 and
whether they represent potential new anti-obesity drugs,” Keating said. Two-thirds of Australian adults
and a quarter of children are either overweight or obese, yet left with limited effective therapeutic
treatments. “We have research funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council. We
can potentially make a real difference in the fight against obesity,” Keating added.
29. How do the researchers from Flinders University cure the obesity?
A. Make a special gene.
B. Block a certain gene.
C. Suggest to do extra exercise.
D. Ask to apply dietary restrictions.
E. Recommend to have an enough rest.

Did you just buy a textbook? Do you want to look for other textbooks with the same quality as yours?
It‟s not difficult at all. When you first receive your textbook, follow these five steps.
Step 1: Find the Title and Author
What is the title of the textbook and who is/ are the author(s) or editor(s) of the textbook?
Step 2: look at the Table of Contents
Find the table of contents in front of the textbook. How many chapters are there? What is the title

many pages is it?
Step 3: Search the Index
Is there an index? (An index is an alphabetized list that points out on what page names, places, or
topics can be found in the textbook). Where in the book is the index located? Look up any topic under
letter C and locate it in the textbook.
Step 4: Seek the Glossary
Is there a glossary? (A glossary is an alphabetized list of words and their meanings. It‟s like a
dictionary that includes just words used in that book). What page is it on? Look up any words that
started with W. Read the definition.
Step 5: Find Another Textbook
What else is in the back of the textbook? Are there any other special sections like maps or lab
guidelines or literary elements? If yes, list them and choose one word or one map or one set of
guidelines to read.
35. How do you locate words that starts with E to see their definitions?
A. Look up words that starts with E in the textbook glossary and read their definitions
B. Look up any topic under the letter E in the textbook index and read the definition
C. look up the author‟s name and the year of book publishing on the textbook cover
D. list the words that start with E and choose one word in the last page of the textbook
E. look up any word that starts with letter E in each chapter in order to get the meaning

The French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique thrive on their image as idyllic sun, sea and sand
destinations for tourists.
But few visitors are aware that these lush, tropical islands have a chronic pollution problem.
A pesticide linked to cancer - chlordecone - was sprayed on banana crops on the islands for two decades and
now nearly all the adult local residents have traces of it in their blood.
French President Emmanuel Macron has called it an "environmental scandal" and said the state "must take
responsibility". He visited Martinique last year and was briefed on the crisis on the islands, known in France as the
Antilles.
The French parliament is holding a public inquiry which will report its findings in December.
"We found anger and anxiety in the Antilles - the population feel abandoned by the republic," said Guadeloupe
MP Justine Benin, who is in charge of the inquiry's report.
"They are resilient people, they've been hit by hurricanes before, but their trust needs to be restored," she told
the BBC.
Large tracts of soil are contaminated, as are rivers and coastal waters. The authorities are trying to keep the
chemical out of the food chain, but it is difficult, as much produce comes from smallholders, often sold at the
roadside.
Drinking water is considered safe, as carbon filters are used to remove contaminants.
In the US a factory producing chlordecone - sold commercially as kepone - was shut down in 1975 after workers
fell seriously ill there. But Antilles banana growers continued to use the pesticide.
