FLOATING

Floating is a skill, which means that

anyone can do it if he or she learns how.
Floating is the best way to conser ve

buoyancy of the head.

Floating on Your Back
This section takes you from standing in
a vertical position to simply floating on
your back. You need access to a pool
with water deep enough to reach at
least to your waist but shallow enough
that you can still stand in it. If needed,
the action can also be done from the
side of a deep pool with afew
modifications.

Back Floating With Arms
Extended
The objective here is to lie back on the
water with your arms and legs spread
outfor balance, almost like a starfish,
and float without movement .

Some swimmers also find it helpful to

close their eyes in order to concentrate
on how it feels to balance in the water

Back Floating in a T
Position(Dead man’s Float)

This action requires a little more control

and ability to relax on the water. Here
again, the mental cue is that your face,
chest, hips, and toes should all be at the
surface—only this time they should also
all be in the same line along the axis of
your body.

Back Floating in a Straight
Line
This is a more advanced floating skill, and
succeeding at it is a major accomplishment;
in fact, some people who have difficulty
master ing i t stil l go on to bec om e ve ry
accomplished swimmers. Once you have
mastered these skills, it is time to practice
them with modifications and drills.

on your back—and the same physics apply—
but with the added element that your face is
in the water.

Sculling
Sculling with the hands enables a man to
control the body in the water in a number of
positions, without the help of his feet.
Sculling and treading combined will save more
energy than using the feet or hands alone. It
develops the muscles, the hands and arms
needed for pushing against the water.

Gliding
The glide is a movement in the water without
taking any effort, it is a way of releasing
tension and is free from the task or
coordinating the limbs.

Let the arms float in the water in front. Make

sure it is pointing forward and at ease. Let the
shoulder stay relax, stand tall but relax before
starting to glide.
