Module Aims

• The aim of this module is to introduce the students to electrical machines and power
systems. Electrical machines include AC single phase, AC three phase and DC motors.

• The student will learn the operating principles of motors and transformers and techniques
used in analyzing the performance of these machines.

• In power systems, the student will be introduced to principal elements of the power system,
power system analysis methods as well as the fundamentals of power transfer through
transmission lines.

At the end of the module student will be
able to:

• Analyze and perform calculations on single

phase transformers and understand the basics
of 3 phase transformers.

Learning • Analyze the operation of single and three phase

induction motors and DC machines.
Outcomes • Familiarize with the basics of 3 phase
synchronous generators
• Identify the elements of a power system and
familiarize with techniques and methods useful
for power system analysis.
• Examine, model and perform calculations of
transmission lines based on design elements.

Lab Activities

• The module contains seven (7) lab activities.

• Each activity will have both a Pre-Lab and Lab-Work session.
• It is important that the Pre-Lab portion be completed before arriving at the Lab.
• If you are found to have not done the Pre-Lab beforehand, you could receive a
zero for that whole lab.
• Five physical laboratory reports need to be submitted by students with a cover
sheet by the due dates shown in the program calendar.
• The lab reports are to be submitted INDIVIDUALLY, and the all references to
external sources (i.e., drawings, tables, and text) should be cited correctly.
