The syllabus content for Mechanics (9709) includes forces and equilibrium, kinematics of
motion in a straight line, momentum, Newton’s laws of motion, energy, work & power.
Each Chapter is broken down into several sections, with each section covering a single topic.
Topics are introduced through explanations and step-by-step worked examples. Worked
examples may include the following:
• Problem-solving questions – will assist the learner to develop the ability to analyse
problems, recognise how to represent information in different mathematical
situations, identify and interpret relevant information and how to select appropriate
problem solving methods.
• Modelling questions – provides the learner with mathematical modelling skills that
can be applied to real life situations.
This course is suitable for students writing Paper 4 Mechanics 9709 for 2020-2025
Stationery
Pencils, pens, paper and calculator.
Textbook
The teaching approach will be a blend of covering the theory of key concepts underpinning
the course and worked examples of how to approach problem solving and highlighting
problem areas for students.
Assignments
There will be a total of 5 assignments. An assignment may cover more than one module of
the course. Assignments may vary between 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the length of
the modules.
Assignments form a critical part of the learning process. The feedback that you receive
helps you to improve your understanding of the question and answer process, and
therefore to perform better on the next assignment.
Each assignment must be marked, and feedback received before the next assignment is
attempted.
Bulk submissions of assignments will not be accepted; all bulk submitted assignments,
except for the first one will be deleted from the system, so that you are given the
opportunity to apply new skills to assignments after feedback on previous assignments has
been received.

AS Level 60 40 n/a
*Please note that in IGCSE and AS/ A Level assignments and tests do not form part of the final
grade that is received from Cambridge.
Exam papers
There are six examination papers in your Mathematics Course and this Mechanics (9709)
syllabus content will be assessed in Paper 4. The details of this exam is as follows:
• 1 hour and 15 Minutes
• 40% of the AS Level; 20 % for the A Level.
• Offered as part of AS or A Level.
Expectations
It is recommended that students follow the course schedule as highlighted in the outline for
Lesson 1 - 34 above. One may move ahead, but make sure that you complete all assigned
work. You are required to show all working for assignments and tests and not only final
