WHAT IS SOIL
POROSITY:
PORE-
SPACES(AKA-
VOID)
Pore space in a soil consists of that
portion of the soil volume not
occupied by solid,either mineral or
organic.
Pore space directly controls the
amount of water 💧 &air in the soil
and indirectly influence the plant
growth and crop production

TYPE OF
PORE
MACRO PORE : It is
large sized pore are
present b/w granules
which allow air and
water movement easily ,
ex- sands and sands soil
MICROPORE : aka
capillary pore, It is small
sized pore in which
movement of air and
water is restricted to
some extent
Soil pores have been divided into following categories based on the
diameter size of soil particle

0.2MM/2
00MICRO 0.2- 0.02- <2MIC
NS 0.02 0.002MM RON
Coarse pores Medium pore Fine pores Very fine pore
POROSITY
Porosity refers to the percentage of soil volume occupied by

pore space. For optimum growth of the plant, the existence

of approximately equal amount of macro & micro pore is

needed
FACTORS AFFECTING POROSITY
OF SOIL
SOIL
STRUCTURE
A soil having granular & crumb structure

contain more pore space than that of

prismatic and platy soil structure.

So,well aggregated soil structure has

greater pore space as compared to

structureless soil
SOIL TEXTURE
In sandy soil the total pore space is

small whereas in clay & clayey loam soil

total pore space is high and possibilityof

more granulation in clay soil

Macro-organism-
Macro- organisms like earthworm, rodents , insect etc.
Increase macro-pore in the soil

Depth of soil-
With increase in depth of soil, the porosity will decrease because of
compactness in the sub-soil

Cropping-
Intensive crop cultivation tends to lower the porosity of soil as
compared to fallow soils. The decrease in porosity may be due to
reduction in organic matter content.
Puddling-
Due to puddling under
sufficient soil moisture, the soil
surface layer is made dense
and compact. Eventually, the
porosity of this surface soil is
reduced by the infiltration of
muddy surface materials.
I believe that there is a subtle
magnetism in Nature, which,
if we unconsciously yield to it,
will direct us aright
