Six months ago, Principal Peter asked all the groups to do a community
Project. Yesterday, he announced the winners: Class 1C. The group leader,
Susan Mills, talked about the class Project: “We decided to adopt a piece os
wasteland near the school and make it pretty. We started working five months
ago. First, we cleared all the garbage. Four weeks later, we planted tres
and Grass. Then, two months ago, we dug a small hole for a pond and the boys
made and painted two park benchs. Finally, two weeks ago, the girls planted
flowers and put fish in the pond”.

My holidays this year were simply amazing! I had two weeks, so I decided to do
something special: go on a road trip to France.

I have some friends in different cities, so I stayed with them and I didn't have to
book any hostels. It was very cheap! First, I drove to Barcelona. I didn't stay
long, but I went to the beach. It was mild for the winter, and I even had a quick
swim!

After Barcelona, I went to Toulouse. The city is not very big, but it is lively and
welcoming. I had a wonderful time. After two days, I drove north to Paris. It is a
very interesting city, but it is huge and stressful.
I also visited Lyon and Montpellier. I especially enjoyed the street markets in
Montpellier, where I bought some lovely wine.

I hope I can do this some other time, it was a great holiday idea!

Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was born in Guanajuato on May 8, 1753.


His parents were Cristóbal Hidalgo y Costilla and Ana María
Gallaga. At the age of 17 he became a teacher of Philosophy and
Theology. In 1778 he was ordained a priest.

In the early morning of September 16, 1810, he launched the


famous "Cry of Sorrows" haranguing the people to take up arms
and fight against the Spaniards who supported Joseph Bonaparte as
the new king of Spain.

The priest Hidalgo led a patriot army and organized a government


in Guadalajara. Here he decreed the abolition of slavery and repealed
indigenous taxes. But the royalists recovered positions and defeated
him in the battle of Puente de Calderón (January 17, 1811). Hidalgo
tried to escape to the United States, but was captured. He died by
shooting in Chihuahua on July 30, 1811.

Last weekend I went to Colonial Williamsburg on a trip. I Know some people


find history boring, but a place like Williamsburg isn´t boring at all.
History come alive before your eyes there. Colonial Williamsburg looks exactly
like a Colonial town in the 17th and 18th centuries. The buildings are the
same, ande even the historical interpretes dress and talk the same. There are
Colonial shops and the people make products in the traditional way. I bought a
pair of Coloial shoes! In front of the old Governor´s palace, a small band
played music from the Colonial period. We had some free time, so we took a
tour of the Capitol building. It was really amazing! George Washington and
Thomas Jefferson worked there. This place is really cool. It´s like going back
in time!

We use the sequence adverbs "first", "next", "then" and "finally"


to describe the order in which two or more actions happen.

Example:

SESSION 11 WHAT DID MARIE CURIE DO?

Maria Salomea Sklodowska-Curie was born on November 7,


1867 in Warsaw, Poland.
When she was ten years old she began attending J.
Sikorska's boarding school, then attended a private girls'
school and graduated with a gold medal.
She later managed to enter a clandestine higher education
institution called Uniwersytet Latajacy that did admit female
students.
In 1891 she traveled to Paris, where she changed her name
to Marie. That same year he enrolled in the science course at
the Parisian University of the Sorbonne. Two years later
she finished her physics studies, being the best student in
her class.
In 1894 he met Pierre Curie. They married in 1895. They
had two daughters, one of them won the Nobel Prize in
Chemistry. Marie Curie was interested in the recent
discoveries of new types of radiation, at that time
Roentgen had discovered X- rays and Becquerel discovered
that uranium emitted invisible radiation. She was the first
to use the adjective 'radioactive' to describe those
elements that emit radiation.
Together, Marie and her husband Pierre discovered the
radioactive elements they called 'polonium' and 'radium',
and were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.
In 1904 Pierre Curie was appointed professor of physics at the
University of Paris and was later named a member of the
French Academy; he died in 1906. In 1911 he was awarded a
second Nobel Prize: in chemistry, for his research. She was
appointed director of an institute in Paris and in 1914
she founded the Curie Institute.
In May 1921 he moved to the United States with his family,
where he continued his studies and research.
Marie suffered anemia due to the long radioactive exposures
she was exposed to during her research with chemical
elements. On July 4, 1934 she died in France and was
buried next to her husband.

A STRANGE ACCIDENT
It was my wife´s birthday last month and I bought her an exotic plant for a
present. She loved it and we put it in the living room. Later that evening I was
in the bedroom and I heard and scream. It was my wife. I ran into the living
room and saw her on the coffe table. There´s a snake under the sofa! She
shouted. It cameo ut of the plant. I got down on the floor and looked under the
sofa. At that momento, my cat, Fluffy, came near me and touched my leg. I
thought it was the snake and fainted. My wife panicked and called an
ambulance. Twenty minutes later, the paramedics arrived and put me onto a
stretcher. Suddenly, one of the paramedics saw the snake and dropped the
stretcher. And what happened to me? Well, I fell off stretcher and broke my
arm! Exotic plants? Never again.

As a child, I was very shy. I did not like to play with other
children and I was always alone. My parents were worried
about me, but I think I was happy that way, with my pictures
and my imagination. I was always making up stories and
drawing them. Maybe that was why I became an illustrator
later. I was not interested in school at all, but I managed
to get good marks, and all my teachers were very impressed
and said I was exceptionally smart. I don’t know if they were
right, but I did very well in high school and university
later on.
