Waterproofing System

DUROSEAL
Hydrophilic Gaskets
DUROSEAL Swelling Waterstops
The active pre-formed sealing system

DUROSEAL swelling waterstops are waterstops which can swell and are
used in concrete structures for the systematic sealing of construction
joints (fig. 1). On contact with water, the DUROSEAL swelling water-
stops swell and seal the construction joint against water penetration.

DUROSEAL swelling waterstops are characterised by:

✔ reliable swelling capacity

1
✔ reversible swelling process

✔ outstanding chemical resistance

Material The base material of the DUROSEAL swelling

waterstops is tough and flexible acrylate poly-
mers which can store water in their molecular
structure with accompanying increase in volume
(fig. 2).

How it works Volume enlargement (three-dimensional) of up

to about 170 % on contact with water, with no
associated change in the homogeneous structure
of the polymer matrix.During the swelling pro-
cess the DUROSEAL swelling waterstops exert
pressure on the surrounding surfaces and seals
the construction joint against water penetrati-
on.The swelling operation and the swelling pres-
sure it produces are illustrated in fig. 3 and fig. 4.

DUROSEAL swelling waterstops show excellent resistance to many che-

micals. The following table lists a selection of the test liquids to which
DUROSEAL hydrophilic gaskets are classified resistant.

Processing instructions

Storage ✔ DUROSEAL hydrophilic gaskets should be stored

away from moisture.

Substrate ✔ The substrate must be free of grease, dust and

preparation loose particles (fig. 5).
✔ Standing pools of water must be dried off the
surface before attaching the swelling gasket, for
example by blowing with compressed air.
5
Application ✔ Application should take place shortly before
concreting (avoid premature swelling caused by
rainfall).
✔ The swelling gasket should be covered with foil
in horizontal joints where pools of water can
stand for some time. Rainwater will flow out of
vertical joints, so there is less risk of premature
swelling.
✔ DUROSEAL swelling waterstops are fully bonded
to the prepared base using DUROSEAL MK

6
assembly adhesive (fig. 6).
Mechanical fastening at intervals of about 20 cm
(8“) can be employed as an alternative.
✔ DUROSEAL Type U expanding joint paste may be
used for bonding of gaskets on very uneven or
rough surfaces.
✔ The entire length of the swelling gasket must be
bonded flat onto the base (fig. 7) to prevent any
leakage at a later stage.
7 ✔ The concrete covering should be at least 8 cm
(3’’) thick (fig. 8). The swelling gasket should be
placed at the centre of walls which are up to 30
cm (1’) thick and on the water-facing side of the
wall if the wall is more than 30 cm (1’) thick,
taking into account the aforementioned mini-
mum concrete covering.
✔ Joints between two DUROSEAL swelling water-
stops should be buttjointed.

Concreting ✔ When concreting, take care to ensure that the

8 swelling gasket is fully covered by the concrete.

DUROSEAL MK
Swelling Gasket Adhesive

DUROSEAL MK is an MS polymer-based, solvent-free, single-component

assembly adhesive used to bond swelling gaskets to normal structural
bases (fig. 9).

Adhesive ✔ Adheres to dry and moist bases such as concrete,

capacity metals and various plastics.

Use ✔ DUROSEAL MK is supplied ready for use in 310

ml cartridges and can be applied using a stan-
dard commercially available caulking gun.
9
Safety ✔ See product data sheet

DUROSEAL Type U swelling paste is a two-component expanding paste

based on tough, flexible acrylate polymers, suitable all-round for the
sealing of construction joints in concrete structures (fig. 10).

How it works ✔ On contact with water, the cured swelling gas-

ket paste swells and seals the construction joint
against water penetration.
✔ An increase in volume of up to around 170 %
produced by storage of water in paste’s mole-
10 cular structure (see swelling curve in fig. 3).
Use ✔ DUROSEAL swelling paste is supplied in 750 ml
cartridges along with appropriate hardening
powder. The paste can be applied with a suita-
ble hand-held gun.
✔ The substrate must be free of grease, dust and
loose particles.
✔ The swelling paste should be protected against
premature swelling.
✔ When concreting, take care to ensure that the
expanding paste is fully covered by concrete.
11
Advantages ✔ Short cure time (approx. 20 minutes at 20 °C /
68°F), so subsequent work is not delayed.
✔ Adapts readily to all construction work situati-
ons and surfaces.
✔ Good adhesion to dry and moist surfaces (con-
crete, steel and plastics).
✔ Same swelling capacity and chemical resistance
as DUROSEAL swelling waterstops.

Examples of ✔ Construction joints of every kind (fig. 11).

use ✔ Junctions between concrete and steel girders
12
(fig. 12).
✔ Connecting joints in sheet pilings (fig. 13) or
diaphragm walls.
✔ Sealing of bell butt joints.
✔ Wall penetration for metal, plastic and concre-
te pipes (fig. 14), cable bushing.
✔ Bonding of DUROSEAL swelling waterstops on
very uneven or rough surfaces.

Mixing ✔ Insert the cartridge into the mixing base and fix
instructions in place.
13 ✔ Fit the colloidal mixer into a drilling machine.
✔ Take off the slip lid, open and pour the harde-
ner powder into the cartridge.
✔ Stir the contents of the cartridge with the col-
loidal mixer until they become uniform colour.
✔ Insert the sealing cover into the open cartridge,
insert the cartridge in the gun, puncture the
opening and screw on the grouting nozzle. Cut
nozzle accordingly to required size of paste to
be applied.
✔ The expanding paste is now ready to work
14 (workability time at 20 °C about 20 minutes)

DUROSEAL Sealing Rings and Plugs
for sealing formwork braces in concrete
constructions

DUROSEAL sealing rings and DUROSEAL sealing plugs are sealing ele-
ments specially developed for the sealing of formwork braces made of
fibre concrete or plastic (figs. 15, 16).

Material ✔ The base material of DUROSEAL sealing rings

and DUROSEAL sealing plugs is tough and fle-
xible acrylate polymers which can store water
in their molecular structure with an accom-
15 panying increase in volume.

How they ✔ Volume enlargement (three-dimensional) of up

work to about 170 % on contact with water, without
the associated change in the homogeneous
structure of the polymer matrix.
✔ During the swelling process the DUROSEAL sea-
ling ring or sealing plug exerts pressure on the
surrounding surfaces and seals the joint against
water penetration (fig. 17).
Storage ✔ DUROSEAL sealing rings and DUROSEAL sealing
plugs should be stored away from damp.
16 Application ✔ The DUROSEAL sealing ring is slipped onto the
middle of the formwork braces before these
are put in place.
✔ The DUROSEAL sealing plug is slipped into the
nd
fast a centre of the formwork stay after the form-
y, work is removed.
eas safe
✔ After the formwork is removed, fill both ends
of the formwork stays (fig. 17) with non-shrink
sealing mortar (e.g. Tricopac 52).

Concreting ✔ When concreting, take care to ensure that the

DUROSEAL sealing ring is fully enclosed in con-
17 crete

SFR crack inducers combined with

DUROSEAL swelling waterstops
for sealing cracks and dummy joints

DUROSEAL swelling gaskets can also be used in combination with

SFR crack inducers (fig. 18).

The crack inducer’s intentional weakening of the cross section allows a

controlled crack to be made in the dummy-joint line and prevents an
uncontrolled cracking. Sealing is provided by a DUROSEAL swelling
waterstop fixed on the crack inducer.

See appropriate product data sheet for detailed information on the

SFR crack inducer.
