College Instructor Lesson 6 CITIES AND SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES Learning Objectives: • At the end of the week, the preservice teacher (PST) should be able to: a. identify and explain the factors that shaped the cities sociocultural and economic development; b. discuss in which urban environmental issues are constructed; and c. illustrate on how cities addressed issues and on how they are becoming sustainable. Increase of Earth’s temperature According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency •Climate change is a threat to the world’s basic needs, since our key natural resources may affect our food and water security. Other disasters that affect food production Droughts Heat stress Floods Climate change affects those situated in costal areas and island regions They can cause the ff: •1. Rising sea levels •2. Soil erosion •3. Massive flooding •4. Water born diseases Extreme weather events increase the rates of transmission of infectious disease It also force people to migrate to areas as they constantly affected. United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (UN IPCC) • Last March 2014 showed how the world is already subjected to the adverse impacts of climate change as it continues to endanger lives, livelihoods, health, ecosystems, economies, societies, cultures, services and infrastructures. •The report warned us that if we do not support climate change mitigation today, the constant burning of fossil fuels and deforestation will continue to increase the growth of greenhouse gas (GHG). Sustainable Development: The Future Challenge According to World Commission on Environment and Development •Sustainable development defined as “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs” •Sustainable development upholds the idea that any social, environmental and economic advancement can be achieved within the carrying capacity of the earth’s natural resources. •We must carefully explore our lifestyles and move towards of sustainable development in order to efficiently balance economic progress and environmental awareness. Example: Solar and Wind Energy Houses that use recycled materials Chemical free method of farming Water stewardships What do we ought to do “We have obligations to protect the ecosystems” “Duty to protect the environment from any and every threat or a duty to bring aid” “Duty to do no harm or inflict damaged to environment” Instead of “wait and see” attitude “Why not do a proactive approach?” Do something before its too late! Suggestions to help environment: • Join awareness-raising campaign. • Involve in Non-government organizations (NGO) that helping environment. • Promote environmental advocacy • Initiate change The most important
