I am Olajuyin Olaleye - A Bachelor degree graduate from the Department of
Medical Laboratory Science, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso Nigeria I recently finished my bachelors program and am currently seeking a Masters position in Biomedical Sciences at Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
My Bachelor’s degree research had focused on the comparative study of
antioxidants enzymes and estrogen hormone from women and I must confess it was exciting. I analyzed antioxidant enzymes catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and gluthatione peroxidase, together with lipid peroxidation biomarkers and estrogen hormone to determine its predictive potential for cancer disease in women. The findings of the analysis showed a decrease in antioxidant defense and reduced estrogen hormone in postmenopausal women could play a significant role in the pathogenesis of various diseases related to menopause such as cancer. The result of this work kindled my interest to know more.
I currently work as a research assistant at the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
laboratory of Federal Medical Center, Makurdi, which is a World Health Organization (WHO) reference centre for HIV viral load testing in Nigeria. Supporting the treatment and care of HIV patients by carrying out Liver Function Test, counting the CD4 cells using the flow cytometer and determining the viral load in the HIV+ blood samples, using the Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) method. What next for me? As my past research experiences were focused on role of cancer in diseases, my research interests also lies in; how immune system works in health and diseases, I would like to explore the role of immune system cell types in inflammatory response and also in the treatment of various diseases.
Hebrew University of Jerusalem becomes is a top priority institution for me
because of the platform it offers for learning and mentoring, inclusion and diversity, and advancement of knowledge in the discovery of new cancer therapies. The university has been known for its global standard-bearer in basic and applied research to contribute to cancer research. I strongly believe that its superior research facilities, the nurturing academic environment, competent faculty, and the quality of internships will greatly increase my career strides on the path to becoming a cancer biologist. Am I enthusiastic and willing to learn in a new environment, while also doing new experiments? Definitely YES! I will be excited to hear from you regarding my interest in joining your research group.
Thanks for reading through my email even as I await your response.
