Emma
I've been running for two years. I used to only run 1 or 2
kilometers, but now I run approximately 10. My speed is also
improving. In Brighton, I've joined a jogging club. I had never
met any of the members before, but now I consider them
my friends. When my father was younger, he was a good
runner who was quite fit, but he stopped after injuring his
knee. In fact, I need to order a new pair of running shoes
which will be just a simple pair. I don't believe that the more
expensive ones help you run faster!
Mia
Most evenings, I go skating in the park. I know that's a lot,
but the park is only a minute or two away from my
house, and I usually spend a couple of hours there if my
friends are around. My cousin, who is quite talented at
skateboarding, occasionally joins us, and he teaches me a few
new moves. I'm getting better all the time!
Charlotte
My best friend suggested I start rock climbing, and now we
both do it. My friend's mother drives us once or twice a
month, but I'd like to do it once a week. I had no idea you
needed so much equipment when I first started, and it isn't
cheap! But I love it. Climbing is something I don't think I'll ever
grow tired of doing!

Susanna Brightman
Susanna was born on 15th June 1992. Her mother and father
were both basketball players and when she was just 2 weeks
old she was already travelling around the country with them
while they played basketball.
When she was still very young, Susanna told her parents she
wanted to play for Australia. At the age of 16, she played for
her country for the first time.
But things have not always been easy. When Susanna was 12,
she toured Australia for the first time. One day, the team she
was playing for lost an important match because Susanna
didn’t want to play. Susanna’s parents were angry with her
but told her that she didn’t have to play basketball if she
didn’t want to. She needed to think hard about her future.
Luckily, Susanna decided she wanted to be a basketball player
after all, and since then she has worked very hard to become
an even better player.

Reading text: Managing a problem. Circle the best answer.
From: Jo Backhouse
To: Karl Anderson
Date: 17 October
Subject: Support for Judy
Dear Karl, I received a call from Judy a couple of days ago
to discuss some of the issues that she was having and I
thought I’d give you a heads-up on what was said, seeing that
you are Judy’s project team leader.
Judy really enjoys working with you and the team and finds
the project very interesting, but I think she’s feeling a bit lost
and struggling to see the big picture. It seems that she’s been
given a fair amount of autonomy to carry out the tasks that
you’ve given her, and of course this level of delegation is not
uncommon in your branch. But I believe in her Tokyo office,
she is used to a bit more managerial direction and guidance
and so is finding this international project quite daunting.
When I asked her about meeting her deadlines, she mentioned
that due to the recent changes to the project timeline, her
goalposts have been moved, and she doesn’t seem to really
understand why this has happened. Bearing in mind that she’s
also facing simultaneous deadlines from her department in
Tokyo, we can presume that she might be feeling a bit
stretched.

NEW CAUSE FOUND FOR CRUISE SHIP ILLNESSES
On several different cruises during the past year, hundreds
of passengers and crew members became sick. Until recently,
many people thought poor food handling was the cause of the
illnesses on the cruise ships. However, some doctors were not
certain, and the actual cause of the illnesses was a mystery.
Now, a new report identified the cause of these recent
illnesses.
A common virus called the Norwalk virus is responsible for
some of the outbreaks. The Norwalk virus spreads easily from
person to person, but it is not caused by poor sanitation. Most
people recover from the illness quickly. There are ways to
avoid the virus. Passengers and crew should wash their hands
often. People should also avoid touching their eyes, nose, and
mouth. Large cruise ships carry thousands of passengers and
crew members and illnesses can spread quickly. With a few
precautions, people can stop the spread of virus.
Example: many people on cruise ships became sick -> TRUE
1. Everyone agreed about the cause of illness.
2. Some people remain sick longer than others.
3. The Norwalk virus is found only on cruise ships.
4. There is no way to stop the spread of the virus.
