ARGUMENTATIVE

ESSAY
HYBRID WORK
ENVIRONMENT

2
“It certainly looks like hybrid is gaining favour,” says
Robert Sadow, the CEO and co-founder of Scoop
Technologies (Semuels), about the rising debate on
the hybrid work model that has emerged after the
2020 global pandemic. Unlike the traditional work
structures that called for employees to come into the
office every day for a fixed number of hours, the
hybrid model allows individuals to interchangeably
work remotely from the comfort of their homes and
elsewhere. While some still prefer the conventional
methods, many are more inclined towards working
from home. Although the hybrid work model
hinders social connectivity, it adds to productivity
as it allows for a more flexible work-life balance,
reduces commuting time, and leads to higher
employee satisfaction.

BODY PARAGRAPH 1.
The hybrid model enables individuals to maintain a
favorable work-life balance which boosts
productivity. When employees have more liberty to
utilize their time according to their own preferences,
they can partake in hobbies and healthy activities to
avoid burnouts. For example, many people enjoy
ending their days by going on a walk or taking a trip
to the gym. Having the ability to manage their own
working hours gives them more energy to indulge
in such leisure. Moreover, individuals can
accommodate their families and households and
thus feel less disconnected from them when they
are working remotely. As Elizabeth Plumb, a
Roadside Assistant at U-Haul narrates, “during
breaks or lunches I am able to catch up on
household chores or cook dinner” (“Work from
Home Testimonials”). Accordingly, this promotes a
more positive family dynamic which improves
employees’ productivity and drive to work.

BODY PARAGRAPH 2.
Moreover, the hybrid work model also increases
productivity by reducing commuting hours for
employees.. The time saved by individuals through
working remotely can then be utilized for various
tasks, both work-related and otherwise. According
to a study conducted by the Global Survey of
Working Arrangements, employees save seventy-
two minutes in travel every day when allowed to
work from home (Mearian). In addition, long
commuting hours prove to be mentally and
physically taxing for many individuals, as reported
by the Regus Work-Life Balance Index for 2012
(Pham). In such cases, logging in from home helps
people avoid tiredness and instead complete their
tasks more efficiently and timely. 5
BODY PARAGRAPH 3
Furthermore, the hybrid work model enhances
productivity by promoting a higher employee
satisfaction. The autonomy to construct one’s own
timetable permits individuals to work when they are at
their best and ensure they are satisfied by their
professional output. For instance, several of our
colleagues prefer working in the afternoon rather than
early morning as they believe they are more focused and
creative at that time of the day. Additionally, individuals
who are satisfied with their jobs tend to be more
motivated and active. As stated in an article published by
the London Premier Centre, “satisfied employees are
willing to go the extra mile to contribute to the
company’s success, resulting in higher overall
performance” (“Job Satisfaction”). This contentment of
the workers thus eventually benefits their employers as 6
REFUTATION PARAGRAPH
However, since the trend of the hybrid work model has
been gaining fame, many people have been claiming that
it hinders social connectivity of employees. While that may
be true for some individuals, many testimonies show that
the hybrid work model allows people to manage their
social calendars more efficiently. For example, Annie Tsao,
the chief operating officer of Interact, a software company,
uses her free time to paint murals at her son’s school and
work after her children are asleep (Bhattarai). The hybrid
work model, thus, does not cause social isolation, but in
fact it allows people to diversify their social circles and
interactions.
7
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, even though the hybrid work
model might be causing social disconnectivity,
it does in fact increase productivity by ensuring
a healthy balance between professional and
personal life, reducing commuting hours and
promoting a higher employee satisfaction rate.
A change in work life dynamic is bound to be
met by resistance, but considering the favour
received by this rising culture, we must move
towards accepting it and finding a balance to
maintain its propitiousness.
