Design Your Own Salon/Barbershop

The purpose of this project is to become aware of everything involved with starting/owning your own salon. Everyone
starts with a budget of $15,000. Research must be done so the information is valid. Material that must be included in this
presentation:

Branding (12 marks)

• (4 marks) “Dream Client” profile – “What is the one service you could do all day long and still feel fulfilled at the
end of the day?” Answer lifestyle questions etc. See below for examples:

Website (17 marks)

• Build a website using your colour scheme, fonts etc., marketed to your dream client. YOU do not have to like it,
but does it appeal to your dream client?

widget if you would offer online booking. (4 marks)

Location (6 marks)

• Location: Which salon suite will you choose (you must choose one of the following and explain why you chose
it)?
▪ Union YYC: Rates are inclusive of all utilities, Wi-Fi, personalised studio branding, and use of all
amenities.
▪ Single studio $410/wk
▪ double studio $675/wk
▪ Sola Salons: The price includes insurance, utilities. wi-fi, and website. The studios come equipped with
cabinets, shampoo and styling chairs, shampoo bowl, etc. They are intended to be move-in ready.
▪ Single: $400/wk
▪ Double: $800/wk
▪ Citizen: This includes everything other than insurance and business license- Access 7 days per week, full
control over design (Citizen provides the backwash, shampoo sink, and styling chair), laundry facilities,
break room, access to ample parking, an online booking system, utilities, and Wi-Fi.
▪ Single: $425 - $490/wk
▪ Double: $700 - $850/wk

Services offered, booking, & pricing structure (10 marks)

Salon Furnishings (8 marks)

• (2 marks) Detailed pictures of Furniture, Décor etc.

Marketing (10 marks)

• (3 marks) Budget for marketing.

Health & Safety, Cleanliness, and Maintenance Guidelines (6 marks)

Any guidelines stated must be over and above Alberta’s Health & Safety Guidelines as these are the minimum expected
i.e., Closed-toed shoes, aprons, gloves, ventilation.

• (1 mark) Do you hire cleaners? How frequently? Cost analysis must be included
• (2 marks) Has the Alberta health code for salons and barbershops been met and exceeded?
• (2marks) While you are renting the space, you will still need to plan for regular business maintenance. Replacing
broken furniture, tools, etc.

Stock Information (6 marks)

Staff & Payroll (10 marks)

• (1 mark) Number of staff: Is it just you or will you have another stylist/apprentice?
• (1 mark) Are they hourly, commission or renting chairs?
▪ Cross check gov’t requirements to be sure that you are creating a legal pay structure.
• (2 marks) As the “owner,” how will you pay yourself? Hourly? Commission? Drawings from the business?
• (1 mark) GST registration, collection and Submission (monthly or quarterly)
• (3 marks) Pay scale. What are the key performance indicators to earn a pricing increase? For both your business
as a whole and staff.
• (2 marks) Dress code – Remember that dress code reflects you and your business
▪ Do you have any expectations of your staff? Anything on the “no” list?
▪ Do you want hair, make-up, and their outfit to be current/fashionable, or is only styled hair needed.

You will create a digital presentation in whatever style you wish (fully on your built website, PowerPoint, Canva
presentation); you must discuss all aspects involved and covered in the criteria.
