Fall Semester 2023 – 2024
AE341 Aerodynamics I
Assignment #1

1. A two-dimensional point source with a strength of  is located at point (𝑥, 𝑦) = (0, 𝑎) above an
infinitely long wall which coincides with the 𝑥-axis.
a. Derive an expression for the velocity at any point on the wall.
b. Derive an expression for the pressure coefficient at any point on the wall.

2. Develop a source panel code in MATLAB or Fortran (it should be named as “sp_StudentNumber” and
uploaded to the ODTUClass system) to obtain pressure coefficient distribution on the surface of a
circular cylinder with a unit diameter in a uniform flow. Follow the following steps:

a. Perform your solution for 4, 8, 16 and 32 panels to represent the circular cylinder.
b. Plot cp- distribution for all cases together with the analytical pressure distribution obtained by
using the potential flow theory.
c. Comment on the effect of the number of panels.

Note: You will get 0 points if the code does not run. The deliverables for the second question are:

• Your MATLAB/Phyton/Fortran code which produces the aforementioned figure when it is run.
• Your comments on the comparisons.
