Understanding Geodesy and Its Applications

Geodesy is the science of measuring and mapping the Earth's surface. It involves determining locations and the Earth's gravity field through different measurement techniques, including triangulation, satellite geodesy, and gravity measurements. Geodesy provides accurate data that is important for navigation systems, understanding changes to the Earth's surface, creating maps, and monitoring climate change and natural disasters. New technologies continue to improve geodetic measurements and support interdisciplinary collaboration to understand the Earth.

GEODESY

Geo – Earth.

Desy - The study of "The study of the Earth”.

Geodesy is the science of the measurement and mapping of the earth's surface.

Eratosthenes (276-195 BC): Calculated Earth's circumference remarkably accurately using the Sun's angle at different
locations.

TYPES OF GEODESY
Geometrical geodesy: - is concerned with describing locations in terms of geometry. Consequently, coordinate
systems are one of the primary products of geometrical geodesy.

Physical geodesy: - is concerned with determining the Earth's gravity field, which is necessary for establishing
heights

Satellite Geodesy: - This involves using satellites to measure the distance between different points on the Earth's
surface.

Terrestrial geodesy: This involves using ground-based instruments to measure the distance between different
points on the Earth's surface.

Astronomical geodesy: This involves using astronomical observations to measure the Earth's orientation in space

IMPORTANCE OF GEODESY
Provides accurate measurements for precise location and navigation systems (GPS).
Helps us understand sea levels, tectonic plate movements, and natural disasters.
Contributes to creating accurate maps and charts for various purposes.

Parameters to measure earth

● Triangulation: - The classic method using angles and distances to calculate long distances. Imagine a giant triangle
with Earth as the base and mountain peaks as vertices.

● Satellite Geodesy: -Using satellites orbiting Earth to measure distances and positions with high accuracy. Global
Positioning System (GPS) is a prime example, using signals from satellites to pinpoint locations.

● Gravity Measurements: -Understanding Earth's gravitational field helps determine its shape and internal
structure. Instruments like gravimeters measure minute changes in gravity due to variations in density.

APPLICATION OF GEODESY
● Navigation and Mapping

● Surveying and Construction

● Environmental Studies

● Socio-economics benefits

● GIS Data

● Geospatial Information

FUTURE OF GEODESY
● New Technologies: Advancements in satellite technology, laser ranging, and data analysis are improving precision
and efficiency.

● Global Challenges: Addressing climate change, natural disasters, and resource management requires accurate
geodetic data.

● Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Geodesy interacts with various fields like geology, physics, and engineering for
a holistic understanding of Earth.
