CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

The researchers want to study and explore ideas about the respondent’s personal

experiences on dealing with the different challenges and work-related stress and ways

to cope with it. The study will use a qualitative narrative research design utilizing

adopted-modified research survey questionnaire prepared by Jennifer Ramsey

Tolliver (2019) and Emilia N. Mbongo et al. (2021) to determine the challenges and

coping mechanism of the senior high school teachers of Brent Hospital and Colleges

Incorporated (BHCI).

3.2 Research Locale

The research will be conducted at Brent Hospital and Colleges Incorporated-

Senior High School Department, R.T. Lim Boulevard, Zamboanga City. Brent

Hospital and Colleges Incorporated is a private higher education institution located in

Zamboanga City, Philippines. Charles Henry Brent founded the BHCI in 1914, and it

has since provided medical and health services, as well as education to the

community.

3.3 Research Participants

Eight senior high school teachers under the Science, Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics (STEM) strand, currently teaching grades 11 and 12 at Brent Hospital

and Colleges Incorporated will be selected as participants for this study.

16

To qualify as respondents of the study, the senior high school teachers must

manage a maximum of 40 students per section, must be employed during the

academic year 2022-2023, and must experience severe anxiety. The researchers will

use the Hamilton Anxiety Scale to objectify and rate the severity of anxiety

experienced by the teachers. Those teachers who experienced severe anxiety will be

selected for the interview. The researchers will conduct interviews to have a better

understanding of the respondents' stress management strategies in relation to their

individual work experiences.

3.4 Sampling Procedure

A purposive sampling method will be used for selecting participants for the

interview. Purposive sampling method will be the method selected since the

researchers will use their own judgement to select the senior high school teachers

who will be participating in the study. This indicates that the researchers chose the

senior high school instructors as they can provide the best sources of information for

this study.

3.5 Research Instrument

This study will use an adopted-modified research survey questionnaire prepared

by Jennifer Ramsey Tolliver (2019) and Emilia N. Mbongo et al. (2021) to acquire

the necessary data for the study. The questionnaire is composed of two parts; the first

part is open-ended question and to be answered by. This part includes asking the

respondents about how frequently they suffer work-related stress, whether they have a

coping mechanism, and whether they have ever dealt with it. The second part is a
survey-questionnaire wherein the respondents will be asked to respond to open-ended

questions such as what stress means to them, how do they cope with stress, and what
17

do they do when they are stressed (see appendix 1). To determine the challenges

experienced by teachers, the researchers will use the questionnaire prepared by Emilia

N. Mbongo et al. (2021) which includes questions about the benefits and challenges

of online teaching and learning.
