Penetrating continents, sounding, perfume in filth, dyes in dirt

Firstly, my first opinion is that the writer successfully persuades the reader into thinking that scientific
achievements like the discovery of a telephone is beneficial, we can see this being outlined in the
text:” There is no reason why a man should not hold a conversation with a son at the antipodes.” This
clearly demonstrates to the reader how the discovery is nothing other than an advantage, to the
society’s wellbeing and feeling content due to being able to communicate overseas with a technology
that is at home.

Secondly, the writer skilfully shows the benefit of a telephone through the implementation of an
emotive language. This is clearly illustrated in the text:” what would the parents give to hear the very
voice, the familiar laugh.” This shows the reader that the parents that truly dearly love their children
would be gratified and euphoric, into hearing their children’s voice that have potentially moved away,
and instead of receiving letters once in a blue moon, they can contact them via a telephone.

My last opinion is that the writer effectively achieves in persuading the reader that a discovery like a
telephone is beneficial, due to highlighting how you can hear the voice of the ones you have
companionship with, no matter how far they are, you can hear their voice. As it’s illustrated in the
text: “of the child long separated by a solid mass 8,000 miles in a diameter”.
This perfectly illustrates how the telephone is worth every single penny, you can hear the voice of the
people that live true to your heart, and you can hear their “familiar laugh” that you find delightful and
charming.

3) The writer successfully engages the reader through highlighting how remarkable the benefits are
with the telephone. We can see this vividly outlined in the text: “There is no reason why a man should
not hold a conversation with a son at the antipodes.” This metaphor emphasises on the fact that a
father could phone his beloved son at any time he desires, and that it shouldn’t be kept away from the
society. This creates a sense of empathy for the reader since, he wouldn’t be able to imagine not living
without a phone In the 21st century.

Furthermore, the writer skilfully depicts on how parents would give anything in the world to hear the
children’s “familiar laugh” this visual imagery vividly emphasis on how a mother and a father would
feel extreme amounts of gratification, to hear the voices of their children, we can also see this through
the children showing their “favourite song” this yet another visual imagery illustrates how both the
parents and son feel content when they are communicating not with words on a letter, but with a
phone set in your own house. This bounds the reader to perceive the difficulties of the times without a
phone, how it would be a day that is bright as a ray of sunshine seeing the person that you have amity
with.
In addition, the writer skilfully highlights the undeniable beneficial impact that it would have on
society. This is shown in the quote:” the child long separated by a solid mass 8,000 miles in a
diameter.” This hyperbole shows the reader that with a telephone you can communicate any parts of
the world with enthusiasm and your predilection. This creates the idea for the reader that a telephone
in the world is problematic and unfathomable, since the thing’s you can do with a telephone make the
person’s life a lot more enjoyable in terms of phoning a person that you enjoy being with.
