A sport-focused 6-speed manual transmission is a first for any hybrid vehicle. An automatic
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is available and includes steering wheel paddle
shifters for manual-like gear-ratio control. A new, exclusive 3-mode drive system allows the
driver to configure the vehicle’s responsiveness for Sport, Normal or Econ (Economy) driving
modes. Driver efficiency tools include Eco Assist and Eco Scoring, which together can help
drivers develop more efficient driving styles while also comparing economy achievements to
previous trips and over the life of the vehicle.
CR-Z Highlights:
• All-new, two-passenger sport hybrid coupe with stylish exterior and sophisticated interior
• Gasoline-electric hybrid with Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology
• Driver-focused cockpit design with sport seats and 3-D instrumentation
• New 3-mode drive system tailors throttle response, steering and IMA assistance to the
driver’s preference
• Performance-engineered suspension design
• Standard safety features: Front, side and side-curtain airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist
(VSA®) and Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure
The exterior’s “one-motion wedge” body form generates an aerodynamic, sporty style with a low
hood and wide stance. A lightweight, rigid platform and a chassis with a wide track, short
wheelbase and performance-oriented suspension components include aluminum front lower
control arms to elevate the vehicle’s handling dynamics. The interior concept is fashioned around
a high-tech coupe style and uses premium-quality materials, while also providing useful space
for storage of everyday items.
Contributing to the fun-to-drive feel, the instrument panel’s 3-D meter design with its colour-
transitioning outer ring harmonizes with the hybrid technology by changing from green
(efficient) to blue (less efficient) as part of the Eco Assist system, or remaining solid red while in
Sport mode.
The “3-mode” hybrid drive system allows for more individualized vehicle performance
preferences with Sport, Normal and Econ modes. In Sport Mode capabilities include increasing
the IMA power delivery curve at lower RPM and electronically recalibrating steering effort for
an enhanced performance feel. Sport mode best represents the dynamically sporty aspect of
driving the CR-Z. Alternatively and for increased efficiency, the Econ mode can work with the
driver to “smooth” throttle inputs, reduce the air conditioning system’s impact on fuel
consumption and potentially activate idle stop sooner when coming to a stop, which is
particularly beneficial during stop-and-go city driving. Normal mode provides a balance between
Sport and Econ modes, and is a good option for any driving situation. Overall, the CR-Z is
designed to encourage elevated efficiency while also providing agile and engaging performance
previously unavailable in a hybrid vehicle.

Exterior Styling
Honda designers envisioned the CR-Z as a highly personal coupe
that symbolizes a new era of style that is sporty yet
environmental at the same time. The one-motion wedge form,
compact dimensions, light-weight construction and aerodynamic
CR-Z exterior styling
design help to improve performance and reduce greenhouse gas
emissions. The progressively raked roofline and sharply truncated tail of the CR-Z is a feature
shared with many Honda’s past and present, including the CRX, first-generation Insight and the
FCX Clarity fuel cell electric car. All of these cars have been designed to cut through the air with
minimal disturbance, reducing aerodynamic drag to increase efficiency.
Powertrain
The CR-Z represents the sixth unique version of Honda's
original IMA technology since the launch of the 2000 Insight,
the first hybrid vehicle available in North America. The
foundation of the CR-Z's hybrid powertrain is a 4-cylinder,
16-valve, single overhead cam engine with "intelligent"
Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC)
that receives additional power from the IMA system's 10-
kilowatt DC brushless electric motor.
The system delivers a combined peak output of 122 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 128 lb-ft. of
torque at 1000 to 1750 RPM (123 lb-ft at 1000 to 2000 on CVT-equipped models). Estimated
fuel economy is 5.6/5.0/5.3 city/highway/combined L/100km on CVT-equipped models.
Manual-transmission models achieve an estimated fuel economy of 6.5/5.3/6.0
city/highway/combined L/100km
When compared to the approximate 250 nameplates of all currently available 2010 model-year
automobiles in Canada (the most-recent data available at the time of printing), the 2011 CR-Z’s
estimated fuel economy rating of 5.3 L/100km for the CVT-equipped version would place it
among the top five of all models.
Honda models within the top ten for best combined fuel economy using the most currently
available 2010 or 2011 Transport Canada data are the Civic Hybrid, Insight and, now, CR-Z. The
CR-Z is rated Tier 2, Bin 2, and uses regular unleaded fuel.
The standard 6-speed manual transmission is engineered for optimal acceleration performance in
gears one through five and for optimal fuel economy in 6th gear. The available CVT provides the
convenience of an automatic transmission with a seamless transition between minimum and
maximum ratios, while also keeping the engine within an optimal RPM range for overall
efficiency. To increase the performance potential of the CVT, paddle
shifters located on the steering wheel allow the driver to simulate a stepped
holding pattern like a manual transmission (seven increments total).
The inner ring of the tachometer illuminates red when the vehicle is in Sport
mode. During Econ mode operation, the engine's responsiveness is tuned for
optimal economy, the electric motor assist gives priority to fuel efficiency and
the air conditioning system can reduce its overall load on the engine.
The inner ring of the tachometer transitions between blue and green 3-mode drive system 3-D
when the vehicle is in Econ mode, with the green representing more meter ring illumination
efficient driving. (sport mode is red)
Normal mode provides standard settings for steering, engine response, motor assist and air
conditioning. Similar to Econ mode, the tachometer ring transitions between blue and green
when the vehicle is in normal mode, with the green representing more efficient driving. Like the
Honda Insight, the CR-Z offers an Eco Guide and Eco
Scoring feature to help drivers track progress of efficient
driving styles.
Chassis
With a low center of gravity and a wide track, the front
MacPherson strut suspension and rear H-shaped torsion
beam suspension settings are tuned to provide a sporty,
solid and dynamic driving experience. All models are
equipped with 16x6-inch aluminum alloy wheels with 195/55 CR-Z chassis layout
R16 86V tires. 17x7-inch aluminum alloy wheels with 205/45 R17 84V tires are available as a
dealer-installed accessory. The standard anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake
distribution (EBD) uses ventilated front discs and solid rear discs. The low vehicle height and
placement of the battery and other hybrid components beneath the rear cargo area further
contribute to a low center of gravity for responsive, sporty handling.
New EPS programming algorithms being introduced on the CR-Z add a new dimension of
feedback control (in all modes) that can optimally match the assist and self-aligning forces
related to the driver’s input with the vehicle’s path through a corner. When starting on steep
inclines from a stop in manual transmission-equipped CR-Zs, hill start assist temporarily
minimizes the potential for the vehicle to roll backwards during the moment between releasing
the brake, depressing the throttle and releasing the clutch (braking force tapers off after a
duration of approximately 1 second).
Safety Technology
In addition to having a low environmental impact, the CR-Z
demonstrates Honda’s commitment to safety in the vehicle’s
design and construction. The Advanced Compatibility
Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure is designed to help
protect vehicle occupants in a frontal collision. Additional
safety technologies include standard dual-stage, multiple-
threshold front airbags; standard front-side airbags with CR-Z airbags
passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); (airbags inflated for display purposes)
side-curtain airbags, active head restraints; an anti-lock braking
system; a tire pressure monitoring system; and a pedestrian injury mitigation design in the front
of the vehicle.
Manufacturing
The Honda CR-Z, in addition to the Civic Hybrid and Insight, is produced at the Suzuka Factory
in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture, Japan. In 2008, the factory added a second engine line to expand
production of IMA hybrid system motors.

Body Construction
The body is a unit body design with innovative solutions to ensure the styling did not
compromise the usability or dynamic responses of the CR-Z. The engineers wanted to create a
stiff body design to ensure that dynamic responses met expectations consistent with the styling.
To achieve this, metal gussets are used in critical areas around the front and rear suspension
turrets to provide a firm base for
excellent suspension control.
Significant engineering achievements
include deeply drawn front and rear
fenders, along with the transition from
negative to positive stamped shapes
and the sharp character lines on the
sides of the vehicle.
Aerodynamic Enhancements
Generally, a car with less length offers greater challenges for aerodynamic airflow control since
the length where flow control can be carried out is also shorter. Yet, overall aerodynamic
efficiency (CdA) equals the impressive achievement of the 2010 Insight, which is 297 mm
(11.7”) longer. The CR-Z’s roof slope and length is critical to its overall aerodynamic
performance, and the stylists and engineers worked together to create the longest roof length
possible while maintaining the visual balance of the car. The curvature of the A pillars along
with the smoothness of the front windshield rain gutter design helps to improve airflow and
reduce turbulence in this important area of the vehicle. The rear of the CR-Z has a particularly
important role to play in overall aerodynamics and many hours of wind tunnel testing went into
refining the final design.
The curvature and shape of the rear hatch and glass area are a part of the significant drag
reduction measures along with strongly flared rear fender arches. Airflow is strategically
managed over all parts of the rear bodywork, which tapers to prevent air turbulence behind the
vehicle. The door side mirrors have been tuned to form a highly aerodynamic shape, supported
by a wing form stay, which combines visual appeal with a low drag design. The underbody is
also designed for optimal aerodynamics with a flat, even floor.
Lightweight plastic parts under the engine bay, the fuel tank and
parts of the rear underbody have been added to enhance air flow.
The front spoiler and front and rear strakes help direct air flow
around the tires and wheel wells.
An air guide under the front bumper directs the flow of air into the
engine chamber for cooling. The rear bumper cover’s diffuser
masks the exhaust pipe on the CR-Z, giving it a balanced look to
CR-Z aerodynamic performance
the rear of the car and aiding the efficient management of airflow around the A pillar
under the rear of the car. The diffuser has been coated in a
material containing aluminum flakes to give a metallic appearance to the finish.
The A-pillar strength is optimized through the use of high-grade, high-tensile steel of class
780MPa. From an overall vehicle styling standpoint, the wrap-around windshield positions the
A-pillars further back in the side profile, giving the hood a proportionally longer and lower
appearance. The rear hatch’s split-level window design with a large upper glass section and a
smaller vertical lower glass section optimizes outward visibility and accommodates the rear
spoiler, which divides the two areas.
Rear Hatch
The split window rear hatch design has been used on multiple Honda models including the
original 1984 Honda CRX, both the 2000 and 2010 Insights, Accord Crosstour, the 2008 FCX
Clarity, and now the 2011 CR-Z. Compared to a conventional hatch design with a single window,
the split-window design allows for a higher roofline to improve aerodynamics while also
enhancing the lower field-of-view directly behind the vehicle. The rear hatch incorporates a two-
speed, intermittent wiper with washer on the upper window. The width of the opening measures
989 mm (38.9”).
CR-Z Chassis
Overview
The front MacPherson strut suspension and rear H-shaped torsion beam suspension are tuned to
provide a sporty, solid and dynamic driving experience. The standard Anti-lock Braking System
(ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and brake assist uses ventilated front discs and
solid rear discs. The low vehicle height and the location of the battery and related hybrid
components beneath the rear cargo area further contribute to a low center of gravity, which is
pivotal to the CR-Z's responsive and sporty handling character. Electric power-assisted rack-and-
pinion steering offers direct-feeling steering performance and improved efficiency.
The architecture of the suspension for the CR-Z is similar to the Insight and the Fit. Changes
have been made to components to suit the sporty nature of the CR-Z in order to maximize driver
enjoyment. The springs, dampers and anti-roll bars are unique and suit the different
characteristics of the CR-Z. The lower arms of the front MacPherson strut suspension are forged
aluminum, rather than pressed steel, to reduce unsprung weight and increase responsiveness.
Compared to the Insight, the most significant change to the platform is the reduction in
wheelbase by 114 mm (4.5”), which increases the feeling of agility as the car rotates around a
geometrically shorter distance while turning, and the reduction in overall length by 298 mm
(11.7”). Along with the reduction in wheelbase the track width has been increased by 20 mm
(0.8”) in the front and 25 mm (1.0”) in the rear to enhance the feeling of stability.
To control the level of assist the Powertrain Control Module receives signals from a speed sensor
and, coupled with a steering sensor for torque and rotation, then calculates the optimal amount of
assist and sends a signal to the electric motor. When compared to the operation of a conventional
hydraulic pump power steering system, the more simple
and lightweight EPS system increases efficiency because it
does not draw a continuous amount of power directly from
the engine. The steering ratio is 12.75:1, resulting in 2.48
turns lock-to-lock.
The EPS software programming used on the 2011 CR-Z allows for two user-configurable
settings for steering firmness (less firm in Normal and ECON modes, more firm in Sport mode).
The more-aggressive setting while in Sport mode increases the steering effort to enhance the feel
of connectedness between the road and the driver.
A 9-inch power brake booster offers a solid feel with high pedal rigidity and a performance-
oriented pedal stroke. Brake assist recognizes emergency braking situations and almost instantly
applies added braking force when appropriate (see Safety for more information on brake assist).
Fuel Tank
The 40-litre (10.6-gallon) composite fuel tank, located in front of the rear suspension torsion
beam in the CR-Z, is a critical component in compliance with Advanced Technology Partial
Zero Emission Vehicle (AT-PZEV) regulations that require a zero-evaporative emissions fuel
tank. A polyethylene composite design meets the zero-level evaporative emissions performance
level while also minimizing weight and allowing for greater fuel capacity.
To prevent rollback, the VSA system recognizes the idle-stop status and upon pedal release
slowly reduces brake pressure from each of the wheels. In doing so, each brake caliper maintains
a small amount of braking pressure until the driver accelerates the car.
Powertrain Highlights
• 1.5-litre SOHC 16-valve i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine with Integrated Motor Assist (IMA)
• High-power, lightweight, ultra-thin hybrid electric motor
• Lightweight, compact and durable Intelligent Power Unit (IPU)
• New 3-mode drive system with Sport, Normal and Econ modes
• 6-speed manual transmission (first ever for a hybrid) or available CVT
Now in its 6th unique version since debuting on the original 2000 Insight, the compact and
simple-in-concept Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system is a parallel hybrid powertrain that
increases efficiency through the electric motor’s power assist, energy regeneration and idle-stop
capabilities. The CR-Z’s 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, 16-valve i-VTEC gasoline engine serves as the
primary power source and is designed to provide driver enjoyment with its responsive
performance, a broad torque band and enthusiastic engine note. A 10-kilowatt, ultra-thin electric
motor works in tandem with the gasoline engine to provide additional power and electricity
generation as needed. Electricity is stored and delivered through a lightweight and compact
100.8-volt battery and power control system.
The hybrid-electric motor’s broad torque band with instantaneous torque at low RPM is designed
to complement the CR-Z’s standard 6-speed manual transmission particularly well in city driving.
The broad torque band contributes to sporty acceleration and reducing the need to shift as
frequently in order to stay within the engine’s power band (compared to conventional gasoline-
engine vehicles).
A Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is available and offers elevated levels of fuel
economy. A driver-selectable 3-mode drive system allows the vehicle to be operated in Sport,
Normal or Econ mode to help maximize either performance or economy. Sport mode enhances
the power delivery curve from the IMA system. Eco Assist and Eco Score are provided as driver
efficiency tracking tools with real-time and cumulative feedback to economical driving styles.
Torque (lb-ft)
Output (hp)
Individually, the gasoline engine 100
produces 113 horsepower (84 kW) @ 100
6000 RPM and 107 lb-ft. (144 Newton
90
meters) of torque at 4800 RPM. The
electric motor can add a maximum of
80
13 horsepower (10 kW) @1500 RPM 80
and 58 lb-ft. of torque at 1000 RPM.
i-VTEC Valvetrain
Part of the balance between efficiency and
power is made possible by Honda’s i-
VTEC variable valve timing system. In the
CR-Z’s 16-valve SOHC engine, the i-
VTEC system employs a two-rocker arm
design (per cylinder on the intake valves) with
friction-reducing roller followers for CR-Z engine
each pair of intake valves, along with
intake cam lobes configured to optimize both low- and high-
speed operation. A chain drive connects the crankshaft to the camshaft. Depending on engine
load and RPM, an electronic controller determines which cam profile will be used and exactly
how the intake valves will operate.
At low RPM, where low lift and shorter duration provide optimal operation, the timing of the
two intake valves is staggered and the lift asymmetrically skewed in favor of the primary valve.
This helps to create a swirl effect within the combustion chamber that increases the efficiency of
the burn process. Above approximately 2,300 RPM, a hydraulically actuated spool valve causes
a locking pin to engage the secondary rocker arm with the primary one, transitioning the
secondary valve into a long-duration mode that increases the volume of air/fuel mixture moving
into the combustion chamber. The additional
air/fuel mixture helps increase power at high RPM.
This approach prevents certain, undesirable sounds from entering the cabin while desirable
sounds are allowed inside. Contributing to the sporty note, the layout of the resonator chambers
inside the muffler is divided into several expansion chambers by separator walls connected by
pipes, which have small holes that allow exhaust gas to flow through. When gas flows through
these expansion chambers it emits sound exclusive to the length and diameter of the pipes.
From idle to 3000 RPM, where the CR-Z would typically operate under normal driving, the
vehicle expresses a distinct-yet-subtle exhaust note that suggests power. The sound of second
order booming noise at low engine speed is reduced, which leaves the most-desirable aspects of
the engine note, the 4th order exhaust sound, as the most-prominent vehicle operation sound
inside the cabin.
At higher RPM, the exhaust note has been tuned to coordinate with the frequencies inherent to
the vehicle’s body. Unwanted resonance frequencies have been minimized by calibrating the
noise-insulating properties of the engine mounts and by using conventional insulation material
throughout the vehicle.
Sport Mode
The Sport mode enhances multiple vehicle systems for
performance including the engine throttle responsiveness,
electric power steering effort, the electric motor power
assist and CVT (available) gear ratio. The inner ring of the
tachometer illuminates red when the vehicle is in Sport
mode.
Econ Mode
During Econ mode operation, the engine's
responsiveness is tuned for optimal economy, the
electric motor assist gives priority to fuel
efficiency and the air conditioning system can
reduce its overall load on the engine.
Pushing the Econ button initiates a range of functions that increase the fuel economy of the CR-
Z’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system:
• DBW throttle angle optimized for smoother acceleration and maintains lowest possible
engine RPM
• Reduces automatic climate control blower fan speed and minimizes A/C compressor
engagement whenever possible.
• CVT (if equipped) transmission ratios are optimized higher (relative to engine RPM) for
greater economy
• Limits power and torque by approximately 4 per cent (full responsiveness is provided at
wide-open-throttle)
• Cruise control uses a smaller throttle opening angle whenever possible
• Steering assist is normal
The feedback provided by Eco Assist simply and effectively helps drivers accelerate and brake in
ways conducive to enhanced fuel economy. Fuel-saving activities like smooth acceleration and
braking make the inner ring glow green. Somewhat less-efficient driving makes the meter glow
blue-green. Aggressive starts and stops that consume extra fuel make the meter glow blue. By
observing the inner ring’s response to driving practices and seeking to achieve a consistently
green colour, drivers can receive assistance in developing driving habits that typically enhance
fuel economy.
Maintenance Minder
The Maintenance Minder™ system calculates the engine’s tune-up schedule based on driving
conditions (tracked by the PCM). When determining proper maintenance intervals, the system
minimizes owner guesswork about whether the vehicle is being operated in standard or severe
conditions. The CR-Z’s Maintenance Minder system information appears in the Multi-
Information Display (MID) and indicates when to change the oil, oil filter (every other oil
change), air cleaner, transmission fluid, spark plugs, engine coolant, as well as when to rotate the
tires.
A tune-up is not required until about 160,000 kilometers. (Note: 160,000+/- Km No Scheduled
Tune-ups may vary with driving conditions. Does not apply to fluid and filter changes. Exact
mileage is determined by actual driving conditions. The owner’s manual contains full details.)
Long-life fluids have been used for reduced environmental impact (fluid disposal) and reduced
maintenance costs. As a result, engine coolant changes are needed about every 10 years or
approximately 160,000 kilometers, and engine oil changes are required around 12,000 kilometers
(7,500 miles) under normal driving conditions, or annually if fewer miles are driven per year.
Transmissions Overview

Ratio
The use of a low gear ratio results in quick-reacting
initial acceleration performance. The start clutch
control is designed to take full advantage of
the features of the IMA system, engaging at
low RPM to enhance initial acceleration and
contribute to fuel efficiency.
To achieve a low pulley ratio, high hydraulic pressure works on the movable face of the driven
pulley and reduces the effective diameter of the drive pulley, and a lower hydraulic pressure
works on the movable face of the drive pulley to eliminate the potential for steel belt slippage.
To achieve a high pulley ratio, high hydraulic pressure works on the movable face of the drive
pulley and reduces the effective diameter of the driven pulley, and low hydraulic pressure works
on the movable face of the driven pulley to eliminate the potential for steel belt slippage.
Even with a 6-speed gearbox and sporty shift action, it is not essential to continuously work the
CR-Z’s gearbox. The ample low-end torque of the engine and IMA system means in-gear
flexibility is also impressive. [See interior section for shift lever ergonomics.]
A Shift Indicator Light (SIL) system uses arrows on the instrument panel meter cluster that
suggests to the driver when to shift up or down for efficient driving. The system is designed to
help the driver control the engine speed in a range where it has best efficiency for each driving
situation.
The SIL also interacts with the Eco Assist ambient meter around the tachometer. When fuel
economy decreases, the SIL gives an indication to shift gears and the ambient meter transitions
from green to the intermediate blue-green colour.
If the gear change is carried out within an appropriate time, then the ambient meter will change
back to green. If the gear change does not occur, then the ambient meter will change to blue. The
driver can follow the guidance of the ambient meter or the SIL to achieve optimal fuel economy.
To provide driving enthusiasts with exceptional control and feel, the 6-speed manual
transmission’s 4.11 final-drive gear ratio maximizes the engine's torque for quicker acceleration.
By employing large-capacity synchronizers (double brass cone on 2nd gear; and a single carbon
cone on 3rd gear), the 6-speed manual transmission offers an exceptionally light shift effort for
the driver.
Further refining the transmission's sporty, high-quality feel is a short-stroke clutch pedal for
quicker shifting, a hydraulic damper integrated with the clutch master cylinder for reduced clutch
vibration, and an innovative clutch-friction material for improved clutch engagement feel.

portable audio device into the aux-in jack automatically sets the volume at a preset level; when
the device is unplugged, the volume resets to its previous level.
A conventional glove box is located in front of the passenger and opens smoothly with help from
a damper and features an HVAC vent opening and a dedicated pen holder. The HVAC opening
will divert airflow from the air conditioning system and is large enough to accommodate a 16-
ounce bottle of water along with other small items.
The black upper part of the instrument panel is constructed of a single layer of precision-textured,
soft-feel composite material. Similar to the same process for making steering wheels, this is the
first instrument panel from Honda constructed by using Reaction Injection Molding (RIM)
technology in place of the more-conventional design that uses a texture layer over a substrate
layer. The RIM technology can better reproduce fine details and follow designs with sharper
bends.
The passenger airbag lid is a seamless design with no visible parting line. The lower portion of
the instrument panel (texture layer over substrate) has a three-dimensional texture in a matte gray
colour.
The CR-Z is equipped with high quality metal-coated composite trim pieces on the center stack
and the door grips. A first for Honda in interior applications, the specially constructed high-gloss
film is made from evaporated metal, resulting in an authentic reflective appearance and a high-
quality feel. The metal evaporative coating consists of an adhesion layer, an actual evaporated-
metal layer and a clear-coat layer that is applied to the parts under vacuum. The evaporative
metal coating can follow more complex contours compared to metal parts and it offers greater
durability compared to ordinary film coatings.
Textured aluminum pedals on the CR-Z add to the polished look and feel of the interior.
Meter Cluster
The instrument meter cluster incorporates a multitude of conventional and hybrid-specific meters.
The most prominent feature is a 3-dimensional meter containing an illumination ring that
transitions colour from green to blue depending on the efficient style of driving, or red if the CR-
Z is in Sport mode. Green conveys efficient driving, blue conveys less efficient driving. A large,
three-digit digital speedometer resides inside the tachometer ring. The area to the left of the
tachometer contains a battery state-of-charge meter and IMA assist/charge meter that shows
whether the electric motor is providing electric power assist or regenerative braking. The area to
the right of the tachometer contains readouts for fuel level and a Multi-Information Display
(MID). Manual transmission models include shift-up and shift-down arrow indicators that
suggest shift points for an efficient driving style.
The primary Eco Assist feedback tool the CR-Z provides to the driver is the glowing ring inside
the tachometer. Fuel-saving activities such as smooth acceleration and braking make the meter
inner ring glow green. Aggressive starts and stops that consume extra fuel make the meter glow
blue. By observing the meter ring colour, changing driving practices, and seeking to achieve a
consistently green colour, drivers can develop driving habits that typically enhance fuel economy.
The Eco Scoring function rates economical driving performance by the previous two trips and
the current trip using graphical representations of plant leaves (accessible while driving). When
the ignition switch is turned off, the leaves in the top line of the MID show the Eco Score for the
just completed driving cycle (startup to shutdown). The leaves in the bottom line indicate the
leaves earned for the lifetime of the vehicle and encourages drivers to take an interest in
developing fuel-efficient driving habits over the long term.
Steering Wheel
The three-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel on the CR-Z is intended to create a sporty
feeling. Steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise-control buttons include Mode, Volume and
Channel, plus Cruise, Cancel, Set/Decelerate and Resume/Accelerate, and Bluetooth®
HandsFreeLink® telephone interface. The tilt-and-telescope range for the steering column, along
with seat height adjustment range, is designed to enhance the comfort of an extensive variety of
driver sizes. CR-Z models equipped with the continuously variable automatic transmission
(CVT) provide two paddle shifters behind the steering wheel for manual control of the CVT
ratios.
The silver mesh sport seats of the CR-Z offer supportive seat construction consistent with the
needs of an enthusiast driver. An innovative active head restraint system enhances the seat's
ability to minimize the likelihood of a neck injury in the event of a rear collision.
Both front seats manually recline and move forward and back. The driver's seat features a
manual height adjustment control with two inches total of up and down travel. A ratchet-style
lever on the left side of the seat base adjusts the seat up or down in increments.
High-strength steel comprises the majority of the seats’ internal framework. Composite
components are used in the base and the seatback to minimize weight and proactively influence
seat cushion feedback. The foam cushions employ various densities in the bolsters compared to
other areas in the seat to provide an optimal level of comfort (softness) and support (firmness)
for the CR-Z. To accommodate drivers of different sizes and body shapes, the seats’ side bolsters
are formed from a separate piece and integrate a strategic support wire to increase stiffness as
appropriate for larger people or smaller people. Larger persons are held in place by the outer
portion of the side support. Smaller persons receive the benefit of the strategic support wire
working on the inner portion of the bolster for excellent lateral support.
Audio System
The CR-Z features a 360-watt AM/FM/CD high-power audio system with seven speakers
including subwoofer, an auxiliary input jack for connection to a portable audio player, and all
models include a USB audio interface 1 for connecting an iPod 2 or other compatible audio device.
Other audio features include speed-sensitive volume control, which automatically adjusts the
volume based on vehicle speed, and CD/MP3 text readout. The radio data system shows
supplemental programming information from participating radio stations while also offering
search-by-genre capability.

The USB Audio Interface is used for direct connection to and control of some current digital audio players and
other USB devices that contain MP3, WMA or AAC music files. Some USB devices with security software and
digital rights-protected files may not work. Please see your Honda dealer for details.

and later and iPod Nano.
Bluetooth HandsFreeLink
Standard on the CR-Z, the Bluetooth®3 HandsFreeLink® hands-free phone interface is designed
to work with many Bluetooth® enabled mobile phones. The system uses radio frequencies to
connect the driver's mobile phone to the audio system in the vehicle. This allows the driver to
make or answer mobile-phone calls without taking his or her hands from the steering wheel. The
system is compatible with Bluetooth enabled mobile phones that have the Hands Free Profile
(HFP).
Bluetooth HandsFreeLink is designed for easy use. After the driver completes a one-time
"pairing" process to link the mobile phone with the vehicle, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink can
communicate wirelessly and securely with the driver's mobile phone when the phone is within
about 9 meters (30 ft) of the car. Once the driver enters the car, he or she simply stores the phone
in a pocket, briefcase, purse or a storage bin inside the vehicle’s cabin and the call transfers
through the wireless telephone interface.

Overview
In addition to its environmental strengths, the 2011 Honda CR-Z integrates a wide range of
sophisticated safety technologies that include the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™
(ACE™) body structure; dual-stage, multiple-threshold driver's and front passenger's airbags
(SRS); driver's and front passenger's side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position
Detection System (OPDS); and side curtain airbags. The ACE body structure is a Honda-
exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal
crashes.
Unlike most conventional designs that direct frontal crash energy only to the lower load-bearing
structures in the front end, the ACE system actively channels frontal crash energy to both upper
and lower structural elements, including the floor frame rails, side sills and A-pillars. By creating
specifically engineered "pathways" that help distribute these frontal impact forces through a
greater percentage of the vehicle's total structure, the ACE system can more effectively route
them around and away from the passenger compartment to help limit cabin deformation and
further improve occupant protection. Integral to the ACE concept is its unique front polygonal
main design structure.
The VSA system constantly analyzes data from 6 sensors that monitor wheel and vehicle speed,
steering input, lateral G forces and yaw rate. It compares the driver's control inputs with the
vehicle's actual response. Whenever the actual response falls outside of a predetermined
acceptable range, VSA intervenes with a corrective action.
For instance, if VSA detects an oversteer condition, the system may apply braking force to the
outside front and rear wheels to counteract the unintended yawing effect. In the event of
understeer, VSA may apply braking to the inside rear wheel while reducing engine power to help
return the car to its intended course. VSA also provides a limited-slip differential effect for the
front wheels by applying braking force to a slipping wheel, thereby redirecting driving force to
the wheel with more traction.
VSA is calibrated to function in a near-transparent manner, and in many cases a driver will not
even be aware of its operation. However, anytime the system is enhancing vehicle stability, an
indicator light flashes in the instrument cluster. While the driver can deactivate the VSA stability
enhancement and traction-control functions via a switch on the instrument panel, ABS remains
fully operational at all times.
Brake Assist
A significant VSA function on the 2011 CR-Z is recognizing emergency braking situations and
almost instantly applying added braking force. This brake assist feature is controlled by a logic in
the system that determines when the pedal stroke and speed exceed a typical range – as they
would in a panic stop. At that point, the ABS modulator pump increases braking pressure while
the pedal is still being pressed to ensure maximum stopping force, an action that helps shorten
braking distance as much as possible.
Like other Honda vehicles, the driver's front airbag is located in the steering wheel while the
passenger airbag is located on the top of the dashboard. When deployed, the passenger airbag
inflates upward and then rearward to maximize its protective potential while reducing the
likelihood of injuries being caused by the activation process itself.
Driver and Passenger Side Airbags with Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS)
Driver's and passenger's side airbags mounted in the outboard area of each seatback are designed
to provide pelvis and thorax protection in the event of a severe side impact. In addition, the
passenger's seat is equipped with Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), an innovative
system designed to deactivate the side airbag if a small child (or small-stature adult) leans into
the side airbag deployment path. When the passenger returns to an upright seating position, the
side airbag reactivates so it can deploy to help protect the occupant in a side impact. This unique
system utilizes weight sensors and sensors in the passenger seatback to determine the height and
position of the occupant, and determine if it is safe to deploy the side airbag.
Honda R&D America’s development center in Raymond, Ohio, performs advanced testing on all
North American-developed models. The facility features the world’s first pitching test sled,
which aids efficiency by enabling economical and speedy crash-test simulations with certain
interior safety components, such as seats and seatbelts, prior to conducting a crash test with an
actual vehicle. It also features one of the world’s highest-resolution impact barriers, which
enables precise measurement of the distribution of impact load forces on a vehicle.
