PART I.
Directions: Based on the given illustration below, discuss the relationship between
Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration. Write the chemical equation of each process.

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants, algae, and certain bacteria convert light
energy into chemical energy stored in glucose molecules. This process occurs in the chloroplasts
of plant cells and involves the following chemical equation(6CO2+6H2O+light
energy→C6H12O6+6O2).
Cellular respiration, on the other hand, is the process by which cells degrade glucose molecules
to produce energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is then used to perform
cellular functions. Cellular respiration takes place in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells and
involves the following chemical equation:(C6H12O6+6O2→6CO2+6H2O+ Energy (ATP))

PART II.
Directions: Give at least two (2) examples for each type of respiration: Aerobic and Anaerobic
Respiration. Provide explanation for each example.

Aerobic respiration:
1. Human Cells: During aerobic respiration, glucose is broken down in the presence of oxygen to
produce energy in the form of ATP. Human cells, particularly muscle cells during exercise, rely
heavily on aerobic respiration to meet their energy requirements. Glucose is oxidized in the
mitochondria via a series of enzymatic reactions, releasing a significant amount of ATP for
cellular processes. Aerobic respiration produces carbon dioxide and water.
2. Yeast Fermentation: Although yeast cells can perform both aerobic and anaerobic respiration,
they prefer aerobic respiration when exposed to oxygen. Glucose is broken down into carbon
dioxide and water, which release energy in the form of ATP. This process is comparable to
aerobic respiration in human cells. However, when oxygen levels are low or absent, yeast cells
switch to anaerobic respiration, which includes fermentation.

Anaerobic respiration:
1. Lactic Acid Fermentation in Muscle Cells: When muscles are deprived of oxygen during
strenuous physical activity, such as sprinting or weightlifting, they switch to anaerobic
respiration to meet their energy requirements. In the absence of oxygen, glucose is
partially oxidized to produce energy, which results in the formation of lactic acid as a
byproduct. This process produces less ATP than aerobic respiration, but it allows muscles
to function temporarily without oxygen.
2. Ethanol Fermentation in Yeast: In the absence of oxygen, yeast cells use anaerobic
respiration, also known as fermentation, to generate energy. Glucose is partially oxidized
during the ethanol fermentation process, yielding ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and CO2. This
process is commonly used in the production of alcoholic beverages such as beer and
wine, in which yeast cells ferment sugars found in fruits or grains to produce ethanol,
carbon dioxide, and other flavor compounds.
