1. Verify that the work tool is properly selected and confirm that the selected work tool system is showing in the GRADE System screen at the
bottom section of the main screen.
Illustration 2 g06314462
2. The GRADE System, if used previously, may have a target elevation (bench) already set. If a bench is already set. Press the "Grade Menu"
option on the left bottom right side of the Grade screen section or press the "Bench Reference" field (top bar) then press the "Benchmark
Clear" to clear the previous selected benchmark reference.
3. Check that the target depth and target slope are configured to zero or the desired non-zero values.
Illustration 3 g06314464
4. Position the machine within the reach of the known elevation reference point (curb, grade stake, surveyed point) and orient the machine
direction in the direction of work.
5. Position the selected focus point on the cutting edge of the bucket on top of the reference point (curb, grade, stake, or surveyed point).
Illustration 4 g06181340
Illustration 5 g06181342
Note: The work tool may be oriented in many different positions as long as the work tool tip position matches the selected guidance focus
point indicated by the red dot.
Note: Rest the bucket tip on the reference point gently, without disturbing the reference elevation. A grade stake can easily be pushed further
into the ground by a machine and cause elevation errors in the future.
6. Once the work tool tip is in position, set the target elevation by pressing the "Benchmark Set" in the function list menu or by tapping the
guidance value field.
Illustration 6 g06320075
7. The GRADE System will immediately show "0.00" for the guidance value. Value "0.00" indicates that the work tool tip is at the same elevation
as the benched target elevation. The system will provide accurate vertical distance between the target elevation and the work tool tip as the
machine works in that directional orientation and track position. This vertical distance between the target elevation and the work tool tip is
considered the depth to Grade.
Note: Only if the target mainfall and target cross slope angle are set to zero, the GRADE System will track guidance values accurately while
swinging the machine to different directional orientations. Unless the machine is equipped with a directional heading sensor, the GRADE
System will not be able to determine the angle of rotation of the machine to compensate for the target slope and/or cross slope angle.
8. Complete the excavation and grading work in that machine position and orientation using the guidance values for assistance before moving
to a new position and/or orientation. When the target slope and cross slope angle are not zero, the machine orientation may be temporarily
swung away from the orientation of the machine originally benched while the machine tracks remain in the same position. This is to dump
material or other tasks. The guidance values are only valid in the benched orientation.
Note: To move the machine position or directional orientation while working with the 2D GRADE System, use "Transferring a bench via touch
point" or "Transferring a bench via a laser reference" to maintain the target elevation through the machine reposition or reorientation.
Setting a Bench from a Laser Reference
Once a work tool has been configured with the proper dimensions and been selected by the GRADE System, the operator can begin to utilize the
GRADE System to compliment manual operation. The operator can utilize the GRADE System to compliment manual operation, by providing
vertical guidance to a target elevation. The act of setting the target elevation is considered setting a bench reference elevation. Once the target
elevation (bench) has been set, the GRADE System will provide constant Depth from Grade values for the vertical distance between the work tool
focus point and the target elevation (bench) that was set.
Note: Currently the laser catcher is not offered from factory. Contact your local Cat dealer for the recommended laser catcher option and the
rotating laser planes for your machine.
To utilize the bench from a laser reference, a laser catcher option must be installed, measured, and configured on the machine. In addition, the
worksite must have a rotating laser plane with a red wavelength. The speed of the laser transmitting should be set to 600 RPM or 900 RPM. A high
quality rotating laser transmitter with a higher RPM is recommended for the use with the GRADE System for best accuracy and ease of capturing
laser strikes from the rotating laser. Low rotating RPM may result in the system not sensing or providing an erratic sensing value to the rotating
laser plane.
Note: A spectra precision GL622, GL720, and GL722 Grade lasers are known to function well with the GRADE System.
Note: Green wavelength lasers will not function with the GRADE System. The laser wavelength must be within the red wavelength spectrum.
Setting a bench from a laser reference can be useful when the laser plane height is known. At times, a laser plane is configured at random heights
for allowing the machine to move throughout the jobsite and maintain the original target elevation. If the laser plane is configured at a specific
known elevation, the initial target elevation (bench) can be set from the difference coming from the design and based on the laser plane.
1. Verify that work tool is properly selected and confirm that system is showing in the GRADE screen at the bottom of the main screen.
2. Confirm that the rotating laser plane is safely operating per the instructions of the manufacturer and configured onsite such that the laser
catcher can pass through the laser plane in the intended digging position.
Illustration 7 g06241336
3. The GRADE System, if used previously, may have a target elevation (bench) already set. If a bench is already set, press and hold the "Target
Elevation" field or open the GRADE function list menu, then press the "Benchmark Clear" option from the function list menu.
Illustration 8 g06312609
4. Verify that the target elevation field is clear with no guidance numbers and no unwanted target offset or target slope is applied.
Note: This mode does not show any benched reference.
5. To bench the Grade from the red rotating laser plane reference, press the GRADE menu option on the bottom of the GRADE screen on the
main menu or press any of the upper bar fields. Now press the "Bench Laser" option from the Function List menu options.
6. Position the front linkage in the orientation of the planned work with the laser catcher below the laser plane.
Illustration 9 g06319761
(A) 2.80 (distance between the site reference laser and the bucket tip)
7. Slowly lift the stick linkage so that the laser catcher passes through the laser plane. It is not necessary to stop with the laser catcher directly in
the laser plane. For best results, the stick linkage should be kept more vertical than horizontal.
8. After moving the laser catcher sensor on the side of the stick to align with the laser plane, press"Apply" to accept it as reference or "cancel" to
abort.
9. Once the system is referenced from the laser plane (as long as any previous Grade target elevation had been cleared), the system will show
the vertical distance between the referenced laser plane and the work tool tip elevation for the guidance value. The guidance value when
referenced from the laser plane will allow the work tool tip to be positioned a known vertical distance from the reference laser plane.
10. The vertical distance from the reference laser plane to the work tool tip is the Depth from Laser and can be used to guide the user in setting a
target elevation at a specified offset from the laser plane.
Illustration 10 g06319762
(B) 3.00 (distance between the site reference laser and the Grade bench)
11. Position the work tool tip (note the focus point indicated by the red dot on the cross section view of the bucket icon) at the target elevation
offset indicated by the guidance (Depth from Laser) value.
12. With the work tool tip positioned at the desired offset from the laser plane, the target elevation can be benched by pressing the "Benchmark
Set" from the Grade side menu option on the function list or a configured joystick button.
Illustration 11 g06319753
13. The GRADE System will immediately show "0.00" for the guidance value indicated that the work tool tip is at the same elevation as the
benched target elevation. The system will provide accurate vertical distance between the target elevation and the work tool tip as the machine
works in that directional orientation and track position.
Note: If the operator wishes to move the machine position or directional orientation while working with the 2D GRADE System, use
"Transferring a bench via touch point" or "Transferring a bench via a laser reference" to maintain the target elevation through the machine
reposition or reorientation.
14. When the target elevation has been set, the GRADE System will switch the mode of operation to show the vertical distance between the work
tool tip and the benched target elevation (Depth to Grade). The status icon in the upper bar bench reference field will show that the system is
laser referenced.
15. Complete the excavation and grading work in that machine position and orientation using the guidance values for assistance before moving
to a new position.
Note: In cases where the bench is level with no offset mainfall slope, the guidance values are correct for any orientation of the chassis on the
tracks. In cases where a target mainfall slope is not zero, the guidance values are only correct for the orientation of the chassis when the
system was benched.
1. To maintain a benched target elevation while the machine track position or machine orientation is changed, a reference point must be saved.

3. Press the Grade side menu on the bottom right corner on Grade menu section then press the "Touch Point" from the Function List menu
option.
4. Touch the reference point you can reach from the next tracked location, then press "Apply" to accept or press "Cancel" to abort.
5. Move the machine as desired to the new track position and orientation of intended work.
Illustration 14 g06241358
8. Complete the excavation and grading work in that machine position and orientation using the guidance values for assistance before moving
to a new position and/or orientation. As long as the machine tracks remain in the same position, the machine orientation may be temporarily
swung away from the orientation of the machine originally benched to dump material or other tasks as long as it is understood that the
guidance values are only valid in the benched orientation.
1. To maintain a benched target elevation while the machine track position or machine orientation is changed, the system must be referenced to
the site laser.
Illustration 15 g06320297
2. The system will be already benched on a known grade as indicated by the "0.00" guidance values, when the bucket tip is touching grade and
the Depth to Grade mode indicated on the screen.

3. To reference the GRADE system to the red rotating laser plane reference, press the GRADE menu option on the bottom of the main screen
or press any of the upper bar fields. Now press the "Bench Laser" option from the Function List menu options.
4. Position the front linkage in the orientation of the planned work with the laser catcher below the laser plane.
5. Slowly lift the stick linkage so that the laser catcher passes through the laser plane. It is not necessary to stop with the laser catcher directly in
the laser plane. For best results, keep the stick linkage more vertical than horizontal.
6. After moving the laser catcher sensor on the side of the stick to align with the laser plane, press "Apply" to accept it as reference. Press
"Cancel" to abort.
7. Once the system is referenced from the laser plane and the system was previously benched from a known elevation, the system will continue
to show the vertical distance between the bench elevation and the work tool tip elevation.
Note: The system will indicate Depth to Grade - Laser Referenced mode in the upper left of the GRADE app screen.
8. After completing the work in the current machine position, the machine may be moved. Once the machine is moved to the new location, the
system must have the bench and the laser again in order to transfer the original reference elevation.
Illustration 17 g06320098
(D) 0.88 (distance between the bucket tip and the Grade bench)
9. Move the machine to the new position. Make sure that the laser catcher can still be moved to intersect with the site laser.
10. Slowly lift the stick linkage so that the laser catcher passes through the laser plane. It is not necessary to stop with the laser catcher directly in
the laser plane. For best results, keep the stick linkage more vertical than horizontal.
11. After moving the laser catcher sensor on the side of the stick to align with the laser plane, press "Apply" to accept it as reference. Press
"Cancel" to abort.
12. Once the system is referenced from the laser plane again, the system will transfer the original reference elevation and adjust the guidance
values to provide indication of the original reference elevation.
Note: The system will indicate Depth to Grade - Laser Referenced mode in the upper left of the GRADE app screen.

presented by the blue circle and dots)
Once the segment alignments icon (26) is pressed, the system will align the created point represented by the green dots between the selected
points to the black dotted line.
Note: Segment alignments option (26) will apply the feature immediately when pressed.
The operator cannot change the coordinates on the first created point. Any point other than the first point represented by the green dot can be
moved to the desired location by selecting that point.
Once the points location is changed, a new coordinate will be displayed for the selected new point.
The section is the shape of the design from both side of the center line in the Infield design that will be required for the work site.
There are three menu options the operator can use to create a section:
On screen (27) - On-screen option allows the operator to create a section by using their finger and the touch screen of the TD520 display. On-
screen option is the best for adding a section from a plan.
Focus (28) - Focus option allows the operator to create a section by creating points using the focus point on the blade.
Template (29) - Template option allows the operator to select a section from the existing memories. This option can be used when a design is
already available.
Before creating a section, it is important for the operator to acknowledge the following points:
1. Press create a new point icon (3), to create the first point on the screen.
2. A point will be created with one grid interval to the right as shown above.
3. To change the location of the new created point (23), press and hold the point until the icon becomes active (yellow and larger). Drag the
point to the desired position. Refer to Illustration 159.
Note: Illustration 160 shows that the point moved 1.22 m (4.000 ft) sideways and 0.61 m (2.000 ft) up.
4. The operator can create as many new point as required to create the needed sections.
5. Press create new point (3) to create a new point. The new point will appear on the next grid.
Note: If needed, the screen can be zoomed in to find a desired smaller grid scaling measurement.
6. The operator can drag the new point to the new desired position by pressing the selected new point till the icon becomes editable (yellow and
larger) (23).
7. Mirror icon (30) can be used to make a mirror image of the created half shape by selecting "Mirror from End" as shown in Illustration 161.
The view can be zoomed to see entire shape of the section to ensure the section (shape) created is same as the desired, before pressing the
next option.
Note: The operator can zoom in to see the section in the alignments.
To move the alignment to any of anchor lines, touch the right move attachment point (35) or left move attachment point (36) icons.
For example, to move the alignment to the center line for the design, the following can be performed:
1. Use the arrow pointing right to move the attachment point. Press the right arrow to move the anchor to the right and the left arrow to move the
anchor to the left. Illustration 165 shows the section anchored at the correct point.

2. Once the section is anchored at the desired point, press "Save" option (38) to save the section.
The operator can view the design in the 3D view by tapping the 3D menu option on the TD520 screen.
Note: The back button changes the edit page, but it does not undo the last step. The operator can navigate back to the start and forward again to
modify the design.
The operator can press the "Next" menu option to accept and move to the next step.
The operator can edit or change the Infield design name by following the below procedure:
1. Tap the Name field (39) to edit the name. Once the name field is selected, it will be highlighted.
2. Edit the name as needed and tap on "Save" (38) to save the new Infield design.
When the create points icon (2) is tapped from the Operator Web Interface main menu a pop-up message will be displayed on the screen that
includes the sequence number of the point created.
Additionally, the system will display the created point (1) on the work site surface.
Note: Touching the needed point by moving the machine and placing the focus point of the blade on top of the next point is the preferred method,
when creating new points.
When creating infield design with limited accessibility, use the focus point on the blade and touch an accurate and predefine point on the work site
surface.
2. Select "Infield" from the Mode menu option (7) drop-down, then press the Designs option (8).
Note: The first point is the reference point and it should be accurately defined by placing the focus point exactly on top of the actual point on
the desired work site surface.
Note: The infield design examples in the following illustrations are used to explain the options and are just for illustration purpose.
4. Select "Point" menu option (3), then press create new point icon (16) to create a staring point.
