Ex. Use the iPads to help sketch a graph of the following functions.

a) f(x) = 3x

b) f(x) = 1.5x + 2

c) f(x) = 3(0.8)x

d) f(x) = 5(0.8)x ‐ 1

The exponential function f(x) = a(b)x + c has the following

characteristics:

• The function is exponential only if b > 0 and b ≠ 1

• The function has a horizontal asymptote along the line

y=c

• The function has a y‐intercept at a + c

• If b > 1, the function will display exponential growth,

where the greater the value of b, the faster the growth

• If 0 < b < 1, the function will display exponential decay,

where the lesser the value of b, the faster the decay

• The domain is the set of real numbers

• The range is the set of all real numbers greater than c
