Read the passages about Archie and Ben and answer the questions. For each question
choose either A(Archie) or B(Ben). You need to choose each person more than once.

My name is Archie and I’m a London taxi driver. I’ve lived in this
city for 25 years. Last year I had my 40th birthday. My family and
I decided to move to the countryside. My wife is a teacher. She
has found a job in a small village school. I will stop working. We
have three sons, who can all go to the school. Now we live in a
flat in London but we are going to buy a house with a big garden
for the boys to play in.
Archie (A)

My name is Ben. I’m 28 years old and I work in a school in a

village called Wrexbury. I’m a history teacher. Yesterday I took
my class on the train to see the Tower of London. I love London,
but I don’t want to live there. My wife is a dentist in our little
village and we have two children, a girl and a boy. We love living
in the country. We have a horse in our garden, two sheep and
lots of cats.

The World Beard Competition

In 2009, the World Beard Competition took place in Alaska, in the north of America. If
you wanted to enter, you had to have some hair on your face! Over 300 people from all
over the world entered the competition and 12 judges chose the winning beards. But
you didn’t need to have a very long beard to win a prize. There were 18 different
categories, such as the ‘Best Verdi’ (for short beards) and the ‘Best English Moustache’.
Judges looked at colour, thickness and style as well as length. The winner of each
category won a prize.

The competition has an interesting history. The first competition was in Germany. This
was in 1990. The next competition was five years later in Germany again. Since then,
the contest has taken place every two years in several different countries, including
the UK, Sweden, and Norway. In 2003 the competition moved out of Europe to the USA.
In 2013 the competition returned to Germany, and in 2015 will be in Austria.

None of the beards are the same. Some are very long, some are a strange shape or
colour, and this is why people love watching the competition. It is really a celebration
of beards, and not a serious sport.

For questions 1–3 you must answer in complete sentences (2 marks each).

1. How many people took part in the World Beard Competition in Alaska?

2. How many different prizes were there at the Alaska competition?

3. When was the first World Beard Competition?
