Preparation of sample
Samples should not be exposed to light and air prior to testing as this will affect the
result.
Cool the sample to room temperature (between 15°C and 25°C) before testing.
CAUTION
IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE OPERATOR STANDS ON THE INSULATED.
FLOOR MAT DURING OPERATION OF THE TEST EQUIPMENT.
ENSURE THAT ALL INSULATION MATS ARE CORRECTLY POSITIONED,

Running a test
Clean and dry the test cell and electrodes thoroughly.
If the cell has been used for a wet sample earlier, clean it with n-heptane and air dry.
Check the distance between the spheres of the electrodes with the gauge provided (2.5
mm gauge).424

ST METHOD
iGTH OF INS!
(Reference Method No. IP 295-83, Reapproved 2005)
Shake the bottle containing the sample gently to avoid entraining air bubbles. Pour
some over the lip of the bottle to clean it.
Rinse the cell and electrodes with the sample and discard the rinsings.
Slowly decant the sample into the test cell until the level of oil is approximately 4 em
above the electrodes. Allow it to stand for about 15 minutes for any air bubbles to
escape.
Switch on the apparatus and raise the voltage steadily at a rate of 2 KV/second. If no
breakdown occurs record the electric strength as more than 60 KV. Breakdown occurs
when there is an arc and the circuit breaks.
Ignore any preliminary transient sparking
If the breakdown occurs during the voltage increase, record the voltage at breakdown.
Make six determinations on the same cell filling.
‘After each breakdown, gently stir the oil between the electrodes by means of clean, dry
glass rod avoiding as far as possible the production of air bubbles.
For the five subsequent determinations, reapply the voltage 1 minute after
disappearance of any air bubbles that may have been formed.
If the disappearance of air bubbles cannot be observed wait 5 minutes before starting a
new determination,
(CALCULATION AND REPO)
Calculate the average of the results of the six determinations to the nearest kilovolt.
Report the average obtained under 5.1 above as the electric strength IP 295.
Record the result in test data book QL/323/QC/528/TD.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Because of the danger with high voltages employed in this test, the operator should
satisfy himself that the equipment is in a safe electrical condition before taking it over
for testing. It is not practicable in this method to lay down specific safety precautions
as different makes of high voltage makes of high voltage equipment are in use.
‘The following general precautions should be observed:
‘Only persons competent to do so may install and repair the permanent fittings.
All electrical equipment must be properly earthed to avoid danger from short-circuits.
A guard should be fitted to prevent any possibility of personal contact with electrodes
or other live parts. This device should be so designed that unless and until it is in
position the equipment may not be operated
A safety polycarbonate sheet guard should be placed between the operator and the
test equipment.
‘Three safety insulation mats are provided and shall be positioned as follows::
i) A floor mat shall be permanently positioned in front of the test equipment,
upon which the test operator shall stand when using the equipment.
ii) One insulation mat shall be permanently placed between the base of the test
unit and the granite test bed.
A second insulation mat shall be permanently positioned between the granite
test bed and the beneh top.
