Technical Document Writing

This will be your first attempt to write a technical document. Here, you have to think of a
product/equipment that you (will) use in your respective programs. Then, write a 300 – 500 word
description (below) of that equipment used in your field. Use graphics and specify your audience, too.

I will be checking the following:

1. Grammar, spelling and punctuation

2. Structure and organization
3. Words used (must be appropriate for your target audience; must also use efficient words as
discussed in class)
4. Writing Process (clear, concise and well-written with no errors)

Product Description:
A theodolite is an equipment commonly used in the field of engineering particularly in
construction engineering. Leonard Digges of Kent invented the portable surveying tool
known as a theodolite in the middle of the sixteenth century. Digges gave it the name
theodelitus, which was rendered in the period's usual Latinate form. Theodolites
generally include three types. They are Repeating Theodolite, Direction Theodolites,
and Vernier Transit Theodolite. Moreover, there are two kinds of theodolites,
digital and non-digital. Theodolites that aren't digital are hardly ever used today. The
components of a digital theodolite are a telescope placed on a pedestal and an
electronic readout screen for displaying horizontal and vertical angles. People who use
the equipment are called surveyors. Surveyors redraw property lines and prepare
development sites to minimize legal disputes. Moreover, they conduct precise
measurements to establish the boundaries of properties. And lastly, they provide
information about the contours and shape of the Earth's surface for engineering,
mapping, and construction operations. A theodolite is a precise instrument for
computing angles in the horizontal and vertical planes. The equipment has been
customized for specific use in sectors like metrology and rocket launch technology, but
they are typically utilized in surveying applications. A modern theodolite's movable
telescope is located between two perpendicular axes: the horizontal or trunnion axis
and the vertical axis. Theodolite may precisely compute the angles of each axis of a
particular object if the telescope is pointed at it. A theodolite is built of various metals,
including cast iron for the base, hardened steel for the bearing center and sockets,
brass for the frame, silver for the graded horizontal circle, and aluminum suitable to
reduce the weight supported on the centers. A theodolite is used in surveying to find
vertical and horizontal angles using optical plummets, a bubble level, and graded
circles. The theodolite is placed vertically above the survey location as feasible with an
optical plummet. The device is parallel to the horizon thanks to the built-in spirit level.
The user may search for angles using the graded circles, one vertical and one
horizontal.
