The ferocious demon guarding the Rashomon
gate in Kyoto leaping onto the back of the
mounted hero, Watanabe no Tsuna, whose horse
rears and wheels beneath him, signed Sosui

With tomobako inscribed Rashomon, kibori


netuske, signed Sosui saku with seal Sosui

The subjugation by Watanabe no Tsuna (953-


1025) of the demon of Rashomon gate is
represented in many forms of Japanese art. Sosui
has here brilliantly captured the moment of
struggle leading up to Watanabe no Tsuna slicing
oP the arm of the demon Ibaraki.
