Introduction - Crochet

*Crochet is the process of creating fabric from yarn, thread using a

crochet hook.

*Crochet was introduced in Goa, India during the Portuguese

invasion. Through the nuns in the 1606's.

*Made used a simple hooked needle.

*Lace and crochet was evident of a women's skill and used not only
in the everyday but as part of ceremonial attire.

*Traditionally given from mother to daughter as a heirloom. And

since it is done together is also an emotional connect.

*Goan crochet is traditionally done with cotton thread, which is

lightweight and durable.
Tools used

The crochet craft form uses two main tools to

produces works. One being the crochet hook which is a
long, slender hook with a handle at one end and a
pointed tip at the other, the other being yarn which is
looped to create patterns

1. Crochet Hook - Come in different sizes, with the size

of the hook determining the size of the stitches.
2. Scissors - often to snip off yarn and thread. You do
not want your yarn to fray from a lousy pair of
scissors.
3. Measuring Tape: helps in measuring the stitches,
gauge as well as the size of projects.
4. Stitch Markers - Acts as a stitch or line marker in a
larger project. Safety pins are alternatively used.
5. Darning Needle - to weave in the beginnings and end
of the project.
Crochet Stitches

Crochet stitches are the building blocks of any crochet project.

They are created by looping yarn over a crochet hook and pulling
it through one or more existing loops on the hook, resulting in a
series of interconnected loops that form a fabric.

Some common crochet stitches and their descriptions:

1. Chain stitch: This is the most basic crochet stitch: used to

create a foundation row or to add height to a project.
2. Single crochet: This stitch is dense and sturdy: used for
items that need to be durable, such as blankets or garments.
3. Double crochet: This stitch is taller than a half double
crochet and has a more open texture. used for lacy items
such as shawls and doilies.

Products in the
Market The art of crocheting has been around for a very long time. And is also
known in Andhra Pradesh, Auroville, beside being one of the most
popular crafts in Goa, practiced by local women for generations.

Goan crochet uses different techniques for different textiles. The motifs
depicted are often reminiscent of Goan life and culture, such as the
commonly-used mandala design, valued for its symmetry and used as a
symbol in both Hinduism and Christianity, found in both simple and
elaborate crochet garments.

Another motif is the shell or fantail stitch, consisting of rows of

differently colored shell patterns to embellish the garment and give it a
slight three-dimensional effect. The pineapple stitch is used in making
skirts and shawls and consists of a densely knit teardrop-shaped form
surrounded by knots with large gaps, resembling a pineapple. Filet
crochet, a technique used to depict intricate images and symbols with a
lightweight yarn, is used to decorate tablecloths, curtains and scarves.

Crocheting, just like the folksong, is a true folk art and in a way, a look
into its history is a look into the history of the world.

What - There is a uniqueness to old Goan Architecture. The

windows were generally made of Oyster shells. And is unique to
each home.

Why - The Windows of a Old Goan home are unique to each home.
However due to cost of maintenance & lack of skill to replace the
shell panels. These are being replaced.

I aim to bring back a little piece of nostalgia. And charm using

the luxury and tactility of crochet

Issues: Due to the change in the type of crochet i.e Fillet to a arched
pattern there was a little tension created in the area. The craftsperson
has to re-do the lines in particular to loosen it.
* Also noticed after the crochet is washed it is stretched and starched.
