CROCHETING

A. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF CROCHET

•Crochet originated as a modern art form in the mid 1820s, becoming most popular in England. Its direct
precursor was “shepherd's knitting,” practiced in Denmark. The other precursor was tambour embroidery,
which originated in China.
•The method of weaving yarn to create fabric has been with us for centuries in all corners of the world –
bare fingers, bone needles and wooden implements have all been used for this purpose. The word
‘crochet’ first appeared in the Dutch magazine Penélopé in 1823. The first English mention of clothing
produced from fabric made from yarn being woven with a crochet hook appeared in the book Memoirs of a
Highland Lady, written by Elizabeth Grant. Although it is difficult to establish precisely where modern
crochet was born, indications point to its relationship with an ancient Chinese embroidery technique called
tambour embroidery which was in 18th century France transformed into ‘crocheting in the air’.

B. TOOLS AND MATERIALS

• 1. Yarn
Yarn is the most fun of all the crochet supplies you’ll need because of all the colors,
fibers, and weights in comes in. Most new crocheters start with a low cost acrylic
yarn, such as Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice or Brava Worsted. It is a good idea as a
beginner to learn more about the different types of yarn available before you
decide to purchase.
• 2. Crochet Hooks

.A crochet hook is an essential tool for crocheting, since it is the main tool
that is used to form crochet stitches. They come in different materials such
as wood and steel.
.There are over thirty different sizes of crochet hooks, and crochet
patterns will usually specify a hook size. Crochet hooks are identified by
either their US or Metric names. For example, a 5.5 mm metric size hook is
also known as an I-9 size hook in the US.
• 3. Yarn Needle

A yarn needle is a blunt tool that is used to weave in yarn ends in crochet
projects that can either be metal or plastic. It has a big eye that makes it
easy to insert yarn into and thread throughout patterns. It also may be
referred to as a darning needle or tapestry needle.
Yarn needles come in different sizes to be used with different weight yarns.
They also are available as a bent yarn needle too, which makes it easier to
thread under worked up patterns rather than the straight metal needles.
• 4. Scissors

A good pair of scissors is an essential crochet tool, and ranks up there as

most important with yarn and a crochet hook.
Yarn scissors come in different sizes and shapes, such as stork scissors
or snips. As long as they are sharp, they will get the yarn cutting job done!
• 5. Measuring Tape

A tape measure is essential for crocheters to have. It helps make sure that
when you are crocheting a pattern such as a hat, it will be the perfect size.
It is also useful for making sure the proper gauge is obtained in patterns.
Craft tape measures are usually soft, so they can be manipulated when
measuring and stored easily. Have a look at my favorite tape measure one
below.
• 6. Stitch Markers

A stitch marker is a small tool that helps a crocheter keep their place in a
project by marking a stitch. They can be used to mark stitches, buttons,
rows and more.
For crocheting, you will want to use locking stitch markers. These markers
open and close, so they can be removed when you are done with them.
• 7. Crochet Hook Organizer

A hook organizer is a good way to keep your hooks, stitch markers and
yarn needles organized in one spot.
You can purchase a hook organizer one at most local craft stores or online
at places like Amazon. A pencil case is a great tool to use too if you can’t
find a case that is specially made for hooks and crochet supplies.
• 8. Crochet Stitch Book

A good stitch book is an essential tool when crocheting! It helps to expand

your knowledge of crochet stitches, plus helps you remember the basics.
The best crochet stitch book is The Complete Photo Guide to Crochet,
which has over 220 different stitch patterns to learn.

D. HOW TO CROCHET(BASIC CROCHET STITCHES)

Crochet Chain Stitch

• Before learning the chain stitch, learn the slip knot, which is what you need to do to secure the yarn
on the hook to begin crocheting. Then learn the basic chain stitch, abbreviated in patterns as "ch."
Most crochet projects begin with the chain stitch as a grouping, typically referred to as a starting
chain, base chain, or a foundation chain.

Crochet Slip Stitch

Are small and simple. They are the foundation of all crochet. The abbreviation for slip stitch in a
pattern is usually "sl st." The most frequent use of the slip stitch is when you're working in the round,
and you'll be instructed to "join with a slip stitch to form a ring" or "slip stitch to close round."
Single Crochet Stitch

Learning the crochet chain and the slip stitch gives you a solid foundation to
start crocheting projects. The single crochet stitch broadens your ability to
crochet even more projects. Many patterns include the single crochet stitch,
which is abbreviated as "sc.“

• Half Double Crochet Stitch

Builds upon the basic single crochet stitch by adding an extra step. The height of half double crochet
stitch is halfway between single and double crochet stitch. The stitch, abbreviated as "hdc," shows up
in many projects. Though the half double crochet is a little more open than the single crochet stitch,
it still offers enough density to create warm projects. The half double crochet stitch also builds fabric
quicker than the single crochet stitch. This stitch is helpful when you want to crochet a project in a
hurry.
Double Crochet Stitch
The double crochet stitch, abbreviated "dc," combines well with all the other
basic stitches. The double crochet stitch is the cornerstone of granny square
crochet, filet crochet, v-stitch crochet, and other popular crochet patterns.
These patterns incorporate the basic double crochet to change the look of
an otherwise basic project.
• Treble Crochet Stitch
The treble crochet stitch, also known as the triple crochet stitch, is
abbreviated in patterns as "tr." The stitch is taller than the double crochet
stitch and follows the same basic steps.
