INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

1. Introduction
An epeller press is a scre+#tpe mac$ine t$at presses oil seeds t$roug$ a caged (arrel#like cavit. 5a+
materials enter one side of t$e press and +aste products e it on t$e ot$er side after e tracting t$e oil.
T$e mac$ine uses friction andcontinuous pressure from t$e scre+ drives to move and compress t$e seed
material. %ressure involved in e peller pressing creates $eat in t$e range of 1637213 89 :  37;; 8<=.
Epellers use a $ori0ontal rotating metal scre+, +$ic$ feedsoil#(earing seeds into a (arrel s$aped outer
casing +it$ perforated +alls. T$e seeds are continuouslfed to t$e e peller,+$ic$ grinds, crus$ed and
presses t$e oil out as it passes t$roug$ t$e mac$ine. T$e pressure ruptures t$e oil cells in t$e product
and oil flo+s t$roug$ t$e perforations in t$e casing and is collected in a troug$ underneat$. T$e residue
of t$ematerial from +$ic$ oil $as (een e pressed e its from t$e unit, and is kno+n as t$e cake. E  pellers
are po+er#driven,and are a(le to process > to ?33 kg per $our of product or even more depending upon
t$e tpe of epeller used. Bigger units processing greater /uantities of oil are availa(le for use in larger
mills. T$e percentage of oil epressed ( epellersis nearl ;3@ depending upon t$e t pe and kind
of products as +ell as t$e epeller (eing emploed :laanu, 233?=.
