14. David is going to a company for a job interview. If he is employed, he will go shopping in
store A. Otherwise, he will go shopping in store B. The following table shows the items
that David wishes to buy and their prices. He is going to buy an item randomly.

Store Item Price

P $200
A Q $160
R $100
S $140
B
T $100

(a) If the probability for David to be employed is , find the probability for him to
spend $100 on shopping.
(2 marks)
(b) If David goes to the company by a minibus which departs at 10:00 a.m., the

probability for him to be employed is . If he cannot catch the minibus, he will

travel by MTR which departs at 10:20 a.m., but the probability for him to be

employed drops to due to his late arrival for the interview.

(i) Suppose he cannot catch the minibus, find the probability for him to spend
$100 on shopping.
(ii) The following table shows the single-trip fares for the minibus and MTR.

Transportation Single-trip fare

Minibus $11
MTR $16

It is known that the probability for David to travel by minibus is three times as
much as that by MTR.
(1) Find the probability for David to spend $100 on shopping.
(2) If David goes back home by MTR after shopping, find the probability for
him to spend more than $165 in total on shopping and on the fares for the
two trips.
