SPECIAL

Have you ever seen a flock of birds flying together, like

a giant “V” in the sky? These amazing creatures are on
incredible journeys called migrations. Animals don’t have
GPS or maps, but they do have amazing senses and
instincts. They remind us that the world is full of wonders,
and there’s always something new to learn! But how do
they know when to go and where to go? Let’s explore!

European Eels undertake a

long spawning migration to the
Sargasso Sea. Ocean current
patterns likely play a significant
role in guiding their journey.
Salmons remember the smell
Butterflies use directional aids like Sun’s of their birthplace, guiding them
position and Earth’s magnetic pull, among back! Whales use sounds like
others, for their travel. Monarch Butterflies underwater songs to navigate.
in Eastern North America have a second
home in Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico.
They cannot survive the cold winter of
northern climates.

II March 24 8
Birds have photoreceptors in the brain to
detect light. They know when the days are
becoming shorter and winter is arriving.
Siberian Cranes nest throughout the year
in Western Siberia. To escape the deadly
winter cold they travel 4OOO miles to the
Keoladeo National Park, in India.

Every year, 15 lakh Wildebeest

travel from Serengeti, Tanzania
to Maasai Mara, Kenya and
back. The exact timing and route
are influenced by the availability
of water and fresh grazing,
which is determined by rainfall
patterns. They may likely be
using various environmental
signs to navigate.

RESERVOIR / DAM

DAM WALL
RIVER

TURBINE

Blocking: stopping flow

Whooshing: rushing

II March 24 10
Imagine a powerful waterfall, rushing down with
tons of water! Dams are like giant walls that hold
back this rushing water, creating amazing lakes
called reservoirs. But why do we build these water
walls? Let’s dive in and see how dams work! Picture
a river flowing happily along. A dam stands tall,
blocking its path. The water has nowhere to go,
so it starts filling up behind the dam, forming a
massive lake. This lake is like a giant water bucket,
storing precious water for later use.
But dams aren’t just water stoppers! They have
special tunnels called penstocks that let some
water flow through. Imagine the water whooshing
down these tunnels like a water slide! At the end
of the tunnel, there’s a big, strong machine called
a turbine. The rushing water spins the turbine’s
blades really fast. This spin is connected to
another amazing machine called a generator. And
guess what? When the generator spins, it creates
something magical: electricity!
The electricity travels through wires, lighting up
homes, schools, and even your favorite video
games! The water that spun the turbine flows out
safely downstream, continuing its journey along
the river.

Magan’s ten lakh and lending him another ten lakh
because Magan desperately needed it!

The news spread like wildfire and reached Magan, who

BALLU &
NEELU

Ballu and Neelu visited their grandpa who lived in a far-off

village. At the village market, they saw a poor vendor and his
son struggling with big bags of vegetables on a cart without any
wheels. Neelu, asked, “Why don’t you use a vehicle for this heavy
work?” The vendor’s son replied, “We don’t have enough money to
buy a vehicle.” Neelu, said, “I can help you make your cart better!”
Ballu, being curious, asked, “How can we do that?” Neelu replied,
“Let’s add a wheel and axel to this cart!” They asked the vendor to
bring the cart to grandpa’s home.

II March 24 18
Neelu requested grandpa to help
the vendor. Grandpa agreed and
bought wheels and axels from the
store. They took the cart and the
new parts to a workshop. They fixed
the wheels and axels to the cart.
They worked together, joining and
attaching until the cart transformed
into a pushcart. Thanks to Neelu’s
idea of adding a wheel and axel, the
vendor could easily push the cart.
His life became much easier.

SCIENCE

Fish breathe using gills, located on either side of their

head. Gills are thin filaments containing tiny blood vessels
called capillaries. Oxygen dissolved in the water comes
into contact with the thin capillary walls. Oxygen molecules
tend to move from areas of high concentration (water)
to areas of low concentration (fish’s blood). As the blood
arriving at the gills has less oxygen than the water, these
tiny molecules spread through the thin capillary walls.
Oxygen-rich blood leaves the gills
and travels throughout the fish’s
body, delivering oxygen to its cells.
Carbon dioxide generated by cellular
activities moves in the opposite
direction from the fish’s blood into
the water, flowing over the gills.
The operculum then opens,
releasing the used water and
carbon dioxide back into the
environment.
