Newspaper report writing

A news article discusses current or recent news of either general interest (i.e. daily newspapers)
or of a specific topic (i.e. political or trade news magazines, club newsletters, or technology news
websites). A news article can include accounts of eyewitnesses to the happening event.

Writing the Report – Steps to Follow

For a news report, the most important information comes from the headline and the first line of the report. The style of writ ing a news
report must be like an inverted pyramid where the important information must be written in the first paragraph. The body of the
report covers other information and supporting details related to the event. And the less important information must be added in the
concluding paragraph.

Introduction of the Report

While writing the report, make sure to start with the introductory paragraph, which must include the main story. The people involved,
place and date have to be mentioned in this paragraph. This can be followed by a detailed account of the event/occurrence.

Body of the Report

The body of the report must include other relevant information about the event. You can describe whatever you noted during th e site
visit and add the interviews you took. Make sure that the report is written in the third person point of view and in a neutr al voice. It
must be written in a way that sounds more informative rather than opinionated. There is not much place for personal emotions in a
news report; it has to be objective.

Answering the 5Ws and the H

While writing a news report, make sure you answer all the WH questions

• What was the event?

• Where did it take place?
• When did it take place? (Date and Time)
• Who was involved in the event?
• Why did it happen?
• How did the event happen?
After you have collected all these answers, you can begin writing the news report.

Writing in Short Sentences

While writing a report, keep in mind that the sentences must be clear and concise. Do not write complex sentences. This will also
help in using the apt vocabulary and in reducing grammatical errors.

Attribution
Always acknowledge where you acquired the information unless it is common knowledge. Not giving credit to someone can get you
in trouble.

Factual Check
A news report is different from an opinion piece in that only factual information is provided in a news report. Therefore, while writing
a news report, make sure to collect all the facts and evidence and present them well in your report.

Concluding the News Report

In the concluding paragraph, you can summarise your findings and also provide information related to a possible follow-up.
A glimpse into the preparations for Mangal Shobhajatra

The Bengali New Year 1430 is just around the corner, and the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka is
a hive of bustling activity. All hands are on deck as the preparations for the Mangal Shobhajatra are in full
swing.

This year, it is the responsibility of batches 24 and 25 of the Faculty to spearhead the management of this
grand event, under the supervision of the esteemed dean of the faculty, Professor Nisar Hossain.

As you step into the Fine Arts Faculty, you will be greeted with a dazzling sight of students crafting an array of
shapes and forms using watercolours and acrylics right in front of the Zainul Gallery. You will see students
deftly moulding clay into fish, peacocks, and birds, painting them in vibrant colours. Meanwhile, some are
engrossed in drawing intricate motifs such as flowers and leaves.

In one of the rooms of the Zainul Gallery, another group of students is busy painting masks inspired by
traditional folk forms. If you wander over to the other side of the Zainul Gallery, you will be delighted to find
an array of exquisite artworks up for sale to the public. These stunning creations are sold to fund the upcoming
Mangal Shobhajatra.

"This year's primary motif will be the child in the lap of the mother, and the nilgai, which symbolises peace
and the disappearing animals of our country. The work on the major motifs is almost completed, and the
procession's preparations are over," said Badhon Saha, one of the students of the Faculty.

The theme for this year's procession has been set as the first line of Rabindranath Tagore's popular song,
'Bariso dhara majhe shantir bari', which is apt as Mangal Shobhajatra is not just a procession but a celebration
of Bengali culture and tradition, a symbol of hope, peace, and unity.

The Mangal Shobhajatra will start on April 14 at 9 AM from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka.
