Brief Course Description

The course introduces basic concepts of maintenance engineering as applied to electrical engineering.

Course Objectives

The course aims at providing students with

The principles and concepts of maintenance engineering

Knowledge and skills in maintenance economics and management

Knowledge of maintenance management tools and computer aided maintenance

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the students should be able to:

Apply maintenance management and economics of maintenance in electrical engineering.

Use computer aided maintenance and maintenance management tools in electrical engineering.

Detailed Course Description

Introduction of maintenance:

Terms, definitions, Maintenance as a discipline and its department; Relationship with organization and
its structures. Services. (6 hours)

Maintenance Management:

Schedules and programmes. Special problems. Inventory and job reports. Storage and stock control. Life

cycles. Planned Maintenance: Meaning, characteristics, benefits and strategies. Maintenance data.

Information flow. Work activities. (5 hours)

Economics of Maintenance:

Life cycle costs (LCCs). Maintenance and asset value. Risk and reliability. Hire or buy and maintain.

(6 hours)

Maintenance Management Tools:


Work and method study. Performance indices. Monitoring chart. Condition Based (CBM) and Reliability

Centred Maintenance (RCM). (10 hours)

Computer aided maintenance:

Introduction, stages and management software. (10 hours)

Safety during Operation and Maintenance:

Procedures. Classification, scope and frequency of maintenance. Tools; ropes, slings and slinging

arrangements, jacks, miscellaneous hoisting and haulage equipment, equipment, ovens, instruments,
tools and fixtures. Protective systems in safety of equipment. Abnormal operating conditions.
Safeguards for operator’s safety. Safety management in O & M. Maintenance and safety processes.
Safety procedures during inspection, testing, and repairing. Maintenance zones. (8 hours)

Mode of Course Delivery

The course will be taught by using lectures, tutorials, laboratory work and assignments.

Assessment

The course will be assessed through assignments, tests, practical work and final examination. Their
relative contribution to the final grade is shown below:
