Density
Density is a property of matter. It is the measure of how much
“stuff” is in a given amount of space. If we want to quantify this
measure we use the following equation
𝑚
ρ= 𝑉
where:
● ρ = Density
● m = Mass
● V = Volume
Density is an important property of matter because:
● You can use it to identify a substance, as every substance has
its own density value.
● Substances with lower densities float on fluids with more
density. So, now you know that stone is denser than water, but
oil is less dense than water.

Now, we are going to determine the density of some objects.

Material:
● Graduated cylinder
● Water
● Laboratory scale
● Objects
Procedure:
a) Mass
○ Turn on the scale
○ Press the “tare” or “zero” button
○ Put your object on the scale
○ Note down the mass on the screen

b) Volume
○ Fill about half or two thirds of your graduated cylinder
with water. Make sure you know the exact volume of water
you used.
○ Note down the volume of water
○ Carefully put your object inside the water (you can tilt
the cylinder so the object doesn’t break the glass)
○ Note down the new volume inside the cylinder.
○ Subtract the first volume from the second volume. That’s
the volume of your object
