SHAPING ASIA THROUGH POSITIVE IMPACT

LET TER FROM THE EDITOR Piolo Pascual is ready to
take on the challenges of
another year

We all need to focus on that more and dim out the noise,
negativity, hatred, etc. That doesn’t mean one is oblivious or
doesn’t care about what’s happening around us, but it’s far
more important for our mental state and soul not to be afraid
and trust that God has everything in control.
At the centre of this first issue of 2024 is a man whose
career spans almost three decades and who celebrates his
birthday this month. An icon of showbiz for his good looks,
acting prowess and gentlemanliness, Piolo Pascual is this
generation’s true male superstar, one whose career and
stardom no one of his generation has attained. Most of his
contemporaries have flown the coop or retired, but his star
keeps shining ever so brightly.
In this spellbinding photo shoot, the creative photography
genius BJ Pascual (no relation) was inspired by Francis
Bacon’s paintings. BJ collaborated with set designer Princess
Barretto to develop a spectacular design. The result was
beyond stunning. It was so good that we had to give the feature
more pages than usual.
We hope that Piolo keeps inspiring and reaching the goals
he set. May he remain a beacon of light for the entertainment
industry and other sectors of society.
In this issue, we also have 20 pages on the recently
concluded Tatler Ball, where we raised more than 17 million
pesos for Project Inclusion Network. We awarded three
individuals who have made a tremendous earmark in society:
Maria Ressa, Kenneth Cobonpue and Dolly de Leon. We also

persistence, letting go” kept bouncing back. Finally, I
settled on this word: fearless.
In light of what the world is going through, with its
economic uncertainties coupled with the social, cultural
and political upheavals, trepidation and fear are natural
feelings. Sometimes, staying home and curling up in bed is
much better. But life isn’t meant to be lived that way. So, I
have etched in my heart that 2024 will be a year of not being
afraid of what the future will hold. There is undoubtedly a
Godly force that has guided us and will continually do so.
In my case, I know that He has taken me this far and will
continue until the end. —Anton San Diego, editor-in-chief 17

THE ORIGINALS
Oscar-winning Malaysian megastar Michelle Yeoh joins two
fellow actors, France’s Isabelle Huppert and Thai star Krit
“PP” Amnuaydechkorn, as a brand ambassador for Balenciaga.
The appointment for the Demna-led maison was less of a
surprise after seeing the Everything Everywhere All At Once star
sitting front row at the house’s couture shows and sporting its
luminous gowns at a series of events. We can expect more exciting
collaborations, following the film legend’s role in the spring 2024
campaign, sporting a timeless dress paired with the Crush bag. “For
me, fashion is a form of art. It’s not just about a dress, but about
self-expression, how you feel in the dress, and the values you embody
wearing it,” says Yeoh. “It is a way to communicate my work and who I
am to the world. Wearing Balenciaga makes me value the artistry and

EASY GOING
If you follow fashion reels on Instagram, you’ll have
noticed the near-obsession of new-gen consumers and
content creators with a product’s versatility. Bottega
Veneta, a house that consistently releases It bags, is
embracing this trend: introducing the Gemelli. The
design boasts a detachable strap, two roomy half-
moon compartments and the instantly recognisable
Intrecciato weave. The rounded contours are
accentuated by plush padding, and the bag comes in a
range of sizes to suit every styling need.

In creating this perfume, Olivier drew inspiration
from his childhood experiences, playing in the garden
with his father. The scent of the plants, the tactile
memories, and, later, the shared moments with his
son, Sebastien, all contributed to the creation of From
the Garden. The fragrance’s green and earthy notes
transport Olivier back to those cherished moments,
immersing him in the serene atmosphere of a sunlit,
verdant space.
Olivier, who has been working with the renowned
fragrance company Firmenich for 32 years, is a
legendary French perfumer known as one of the
brightest and most respected in the industry. Born in
Grasse, a French town famous for perfumery, he was
raised in a family with a rich heritage in fragrance. His
great-grandfather cultivated roses and jasmine, while
his grandfather traded natural ingredients. On the other
hand, Sebastien was exposed to the art of perfumery at
an early age, having witnessed his father work on some
of the world’s most iconic scents. This inspired him to
take the same path as his father and eventually establish
his reputation in the industry for creating impactful and
innovative fragrances.
“Sebastien and I have the same style. We both like
short formulas. [We are] very minimalist. We were two
brains working on one idea [in creating this fragrance].
It’s lots of pleasure and fun [working together as father
and son],” Olivier wraps up.

FREAK OUT
Ulysse Nardin’s Freak One OPS is a bold reinterpretation
of the classic Freak One, and was unveiled at Dubai Watch
Week this year. Its black DLC titanium casing aside, this
44mm timepiece is presented in a distinctive khaki green.
The watch’s innovative bezel is crafted from carbonium,
a lightweight, high-strength material sourced from
aircraft manufacturing offcuts, a move that reduces its
environmental footprint by 40 per cent. The watch’s open
face reveals the UN-240 Manufacture movement, with a
flying carousel that indicates the minutes; the oscillator
and balance spring are showcased in vibrant blue silicon,
a nod to the Freak’s innovative history. The watch comes
with two strap options, both featuring black DLC titanium
and black ceramic folding clasps, and composed of 30
per cent recycled rubber, further enhancing the brand’s
commitment to sustainability. The automatic movement
boasts a substantial 90-hour power reserve.

Tatler Ball, held last November 18, 2023, at the Grand
Ballroom of Shangri-La The Fort. To see months of
work and planning come to life so beautifully is both a
blessing and a silent cheer of joy.
This Tatler Ball, 300 people gathered for an
evening’s celebration to raise funds for an extremely
worthy cause. This is the magic number of guests; it
allows us to invite mindfully selected people and keep
to a number that can be considered exclusive.
There were a few changes this year to spice things
up. We used the ballroom foyer as the photo vignette
area and transferred our cocktails to the first one-
third of the function space. In this “Tatler Lounge”,
we featured a lovely large fountain adorned with lush
plants and flowers, a display area for our auction items
and comfortable sofas and armchairs grouped with
coffee tables and cocktail tables. One accessed the
inner dinner space by walking through the double
curtains we installed. All this was done so well by Cyndi
Fernandez-Beltran of Moss Manila. We got so many
favourable comments from guests on our new layout!
An initiative like ours is greatly helped by having
stellar partners. Our headline partner was Tiffany & Co,

of intense and confidential planning, with focus and
vision and much help from a few trusted members of
the Tatler team and a group of suppliers we have come
to rely upon through the last 22 years. It all starts with
an idea. What was the underlying theme this year? For
2023, we wanted it to have a slight Moroccan touch.
This was carried in the print we used for the invitation
envelopes, in our food at dinner as a design inspiration
for our decoration, and in our Ball booklets placed in
each guest’s place setting.
The programme started with my welcome remarks
as Tatler Philippines’ managing director. I shared
vital facts about the business, profusely thanked our
partners and introduced Project Inclusion Network.

and is a testament to how powerful good intentions and
generosity can result in an outpouring of giving.
Tatler’s charity auction started mid-meal, where
five desirable auction lots were offered for public
bidding. Our fantastic auctioneers for the evening were
Tim Yap, Stephanie Zubiri and Small Laude. These
five lots were auctioned: a vibrant artwork by Raffy
Napay donated by Senator Mark Villar and wife, Em
Aglipay Villar; a four-night stay in Luxe Nomad’s The
Vale Rusutsu in Hokkaido; a Reversa One Monoface
Jaeger-LeCoultre ladies watch donated by Lucerne;
an Amanpulo Escape with Jewelmer that includes a
three-night stay in Amanpulo with a visit to the Pearl
Farm and a Jewelmer pendant; and another artwork
titled, Downfall Eclipse, by Jigger Cruz donated by
Léon Gallery.
After that energetic bidding, we featured the
excellent singer Morisette Amon, who gave us a tour
de force performance. Now it was time for our much-
anticipated Tatler Awards. Tatler Philippines EIC,
Anton San Diego and the beautiful Heart Evangelista
hosted this part of the programme. The three awards
were carefully chosen and only revealed on the night of
the Ball. Golden Globe-nominated actor Dolly de Leon
received the Arts and Culture Award for her influence
and indelible impact in defining culture through her
craft. Besides the award, de Leon received a stunning
Tiffany Knot, an 18-carat yellow gold ring. The second
awardee was the notable designer Kenneth Cobonpue,
who won the Impact Award for inspiring today’s
generation of artisans. He received an Elsa Peretti
Thumbprint Bowl in cobalt handmade, mouth-blown
Venetian glass from Tiffany & Co. Lastly, the award-
winning journalist and Nobel laureate Maria Ressa
was recognised as the 2023 Diamond Awardee for
leaving an indelible mark in the field of journalism. The
fearless journalist received a special gift from Hermès.
Can an event be called a Ball without dancing? I

the RMAF was organised in Manila with seven Filipinos

Rosento and the rest of the environmental crusaders
who go toe-to-toe with illegal loggers, unscrupulous

but a fight to save our country from ecological
degradation and enduring human rights abuses.
Delikado, an investigative documentary produced by
Thoughtful Robot and Narravi Films, is a co-production
of ITVS and POV/American Documentary and
distributed by PBS. In 2023, it was nominated for the
44th News & Documentary Emmy Awards. Although
it lost the Outstanding Investigative Documentary
award to HBO Max’s Escape from Kabul, producer Kara
Magsanoc-Alikpala, who helmed the project, says, “It
never felt that way.”
The film project’s beginning goes back to the
2011 tourism piece assignment of Delikado’s writer
and director, Karl Malakunas. It was supposed to
be a collaboration with broadcast journalist and
environmental activist Gerry Ortega.
“The story never happened because of Gerry’s death
due to his anti-mining and anti-corruption crusade,”
Magsanoc-Alikpala says. “Karl investigated his murder

The film follows Chan, an environmental lawyer;
Balladares, a farmer and former para-enforcer who
apprehends illegal loggers and fishermen; and former
El Nido Mayor Nieves Cabunalda Rosento. Together,
they risk their lives to prevent politicians and business
people from destroying Palawan.
The enduring struggle highlighted in the
documentary also resonates with the conflicts in local
communities in Brazil, Cambodia, the Democratic
Republic of Congo and other parts of the world. The
thread that binds them is the greediness of giant
capitalist corporations and the collaboration and
accountability of certain governments to these crimes
against nature.
Global Witness in 2018 reported the Philippines had
“the highest number of killings of land and environmental
defenders”. When asked what sparked them to produce
this documentary, the Delikado producer answers, “We
hope to help change this narrative.”
Because of the film, Magsanoc-Alikpala has come to
admire the people featured in this documentary, who
bravely face libel, death threats and constant harassment
from influential people in business and politics. “What
they do seems ordinary and routinary to them. But from
where I stand, what they do daily to protect Palawan as
the country’s last frontier is heroic.”
Malakunas travelled back and forth Palawan to shoot
the film, sometimes using an amateur camera. The actual
