SUB TOPIC: Compound-Complex Sentence

TOPIC: Sentences

OBJECTIVES:

- Clearly, define the term ‘compound-complex sentence’.


- Correctly, identify the elements of a compound – complex sentence.
- Correctly, identify elements of the compound-complex sentence

 The compound-complex sentence combines elements of compound and complex sentences. In other
words, a compound-complex sentence comprises at least two independent clauses and one or more
dependent clauses.
 Understanding Clauses
A clause is comprises at least one subject and one verb. There are two types of clauses: the
independent clause and the dependent clause.
 Independent Clause - An independent clause makes a statement or asks a question that can act as a
complete sentence.
Example: The dog barks.
 Dependent Clause - A dependent clause cannot act as a complete sentence because it begins with a
subordinating word, such as when, because, if, whoever, etc.
Example: When the dog barks.
 All grammatically correct sentences have at least one independent clause, and, therefore, they have at
least one subject and one verb.
 Constructing a compound – complex sentence:

Key: independent clause = yellow, bold; comma or semicolon = pink; coordinating conjunction = green,
underlined; dependent clause = blue, italics
Example 1:
Though Mitchell prefers watching romantic films,he rented the latest spy thriller,andhe enjoyed it
very much.
Example 2:
Laura forgot her friend's birthday,soshe sent her a cardwhen she finally remembered

Exercise

Instruction: Underline and indicate the independent clauses, dependent clauses and coordinating
conjunctions in the following compound – complex sentences.

1. When I grow up, I want to be a ballerina, and my mom is proud of me.

2. I will get to watch television, but first, I have to clean up the dishes after we finish eating.

3. We won the game, but my uniform was muddy because it rained the entire time.

4. After our trip to the beach, school started back, and I was excited to see my friends.

5. Sarah cried when her cat got sick, but he soon got better.

6. The sun is shining through the clouds, so I think that we can go swimming.

7. She completed he literature review, but she still needs to work on her methods section even though she

finished her methods course last semester.

8. Although he organized his sources by theme, he decided to arrange them chronologically, and he

carefully followed the MEAL plan for organization.

9. With pizza and soda at hand, they studied APA rules for many hours, and they decided that writing APA

made sense because it was clear, concise, and objective.

10. Kate doesn’t like cartoons because they are loud, so she doesn’t watch them.

11. The dog started barking so the cat ran away and I couldn’t keep up, so I stopped.

12. Even though she was tired, Abby knew she had to finish the race and she ran to meet her team.

13. Usually I take a walk every day while the sun sets, but it was raining today.

14. She likes to sleep in but she can get up early if she has work.

15. . After the two soccer players lost their game, they joined their other teammates for lunch, and they went

to the movies.
