2 a) Read the information about Tower Bridge and fill in the table below.

Interesting Facts about Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London and it is one of the most
popular symbols of London. You can both walk and drive a car across the bridge. Two walkways
connect two bridge towers. It is the only drawbridge on the Thames that raises for tall ships to pass
through.
The start year of building the bridge is 1886 and the end year is 1894. The newspapers from that
period report that 432 workers are building the bridge. The framework for the towers and walkways
is made of over 70,000 tons of concrete and 11,000 tons of steel.
Tower Bridge is 244 metres long and each tower is 65 meters high. The first photographs show the
original chocolate brown colour of the bridge, while now it is red, white and blue.
Over 40,000 people use Tower Bridge every day. It usually opens two times a day, which is around
700 times a year. The bridge is free for all people. If you plan to walk across Tower Bridge, it takes
you no longer than 10 minutes.

Birthday Parties

Emma: My birthday is on 9 April, so the weather is always fantastic. My parents usually take me and
three of my best friends to Disneyland in Paris and we spend an amazing weekend there. We have
so much fun that I sometimes even forget about my birthday presents. Only when I come home, I
remember that a birthday present from my parents is waiting for me in my bedroom.

Lucas: My favourite birthdays are when my dad organises carting for my whole class! First, we race
against each other in turns until we get to the finals when the two best drivers race against each
other. It usually happens that I race against my best friend. He really wants to win, but so do I!
I guess I am luckier and always get a faster go-cart. It is usually a close race, but I win fair and
square.

Jill: My birthday in on 15 July so I usually celebrate it outdoors. All my birthday parties are pretty
much the same. My friends come over, we eat pizza and cake, play some games, watch a movie and
then we camp in my backyard, which sometimes gets really loud because some girls try to scare the
others. In the morning, my mum makes us pancakes and they all go home.

Kate: I don’t like birthdays that much and I’m not excited about celebrating my birthday. But I do
love makeup! That’s why my mum is organising a special birthday party for me this year. I hope that
she finds a professional makeup artist to do makeup for me, my cousins and my friends so we can
dress up and go to the cinema looking like that.
