WHEN SHOULD I USE SUBJECT PRONOUNS?

The subject pronouns are: I, you, he, she, it, we, they. They usually come before a verb, as the
subject of a verb.
Examples:
You are late.
She comes to school by bus.

In the examples above, the subject pronouns (you, she) are followed by the verb (are, comes).

WHEN SHOULD I USE ADJECTIVES?


The adjectives are: my, your, his, her, its, our, their. They usually come before a noun (the name
of an object, for example) to indicate that something belongs to somebody.
Examples:
Gerry never lets anyone play with her toys.
Can I borrow your book?

WHEN SHOULD I USE OBJECT PRONOUNS?


The object pronouns are: me, you, him, her, it, us, them. They usually come immediately after a
verb or a preposition.
Examples:
Give me some money!
I'm crazy for her.

WHEN SHOULD I USE PRONOUNS?


The pronouns are: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs. They are used to refer to a possessed
thing that has already been mentioned or is implied. In this case, you can’t mention the object again.
Note that ‘its’ is never used, so it doesn’t really exist.
Examples:
These pencils are mine (These pencils belong to me.)
A: "Whose car is that?"
B: "It's hers" (The car belongs to her.)

WHEN SHOULD I USE REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS?


The reflexive pronouns are: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, themselves. They
are used when the subject and the object of a verb are the same.
Examples:
Getúlio Vargas killed himself.
I cut myself with a knife.

WHEN SHOULD I USE REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS?


The reflexive pronouns are: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves and
themselves. They are used when the subject and the object of a verb are the same.
Exemplos:
Getúlio Vargas killed himself. I cut myself with a knife.
Reflexive Pronouns can also be used to emphasize a noun or pronoun, meaning that particular
one.
I myself baked the cake.

Note that by + reflexive pronoun means alone or without any help.


I was all by myself at home last night. (alone)
The kids built the tree house by themselves. (without any help)
