1. Aims/Objectives
This course aims:
1) to develop accuracy and fluency in English so that it can be used successfully in work, social, and personal contexts,
2) to develop the skills and tools necessary to use English for everyday communication (with particular focus being placed
on the development of listening and speaking skills), and
3) to develop confidence in using English through discussions, activities, and role-plays on various topics of interest.
2. Instructor’s Expectations/Class Requirements
You are required to:
1. Come to class prepared. Bring a pen, a pencil, an eraser, a notebook, your textbook, handouts, and homework.
2. Sit in the front rows of the classroom and be ready to start on time. If you miss a class, you are expected to know
the material presented and do the assigned homework. If you are absent due to an illness, bring a doctor’s note
to the next lesson to have your absence excused (a prescription for medication is not enough). If you are late,
make sure your attendance is recorded. If a class is held by video, the video must be watched before the start of
the next lesson (within one week of the video being posted).
3. Participate actively and enthusiastically in class discussions and activities and be polite in your interactions with
your classmates and the teacher.
4. Show that you are developing by accurately using the English we are studying as a communication tool. This
includes appropriate use of conversation patterns, grammar structures, and vocabulary words.
5. Try in English first. English is the expected method of communication in this class.
6. Join Canvas and install the app on your phone, tablet, or laptop. Class updates and lecture notes will be
distributed via Canvas throughout the semester.
Students who violate the above rules will lose participation points!
You are expected to:
1. Ask questions in class and assist others.
2. Try to use your English outside the classroom.
3. Contact the instructor to ask about anything you are having difficulty with.

Participation and Homework Assignments

A late arrival will result in a 7% deduction from your participation and homework score, while an unexcused absence will result in a
20% deduction. Students are late if they arrive after roll call has started. Students who are more than 30 minutes late are considered
absent. Missing four classes is an F. Participation means actively trying to develop English skills. Students who do not actively
participate will lose points. Working on homework for other classes, texting friends, extensively speaking in Korean, and other non-
English class related activities will result in point deductions. Students who do not try to engage their partner during the class
discussions and role-plays will also lose points. Students who try to communicate in English will be considered as having met the
participation requirements for each class.

Students will be given weekly homework assignments which will be scored on effort. These will be things such as vocabulary and
grammar building exercises, listening activities, and short writing activities. Generally, missing assignments will result in a 14%
deduction from your participation and homework score, while assignments completed unsatisfactorily will result in a 7% deduction.

and role-plays reviewing material covered in recent lessons. The due dates of these assignments are listed on the schedule.
