IDIOMS AND PHRASES :


​1. Bite the bullet
Meaning: Do something although you don't want to.
Example:The kids decided to bite the bullet and clean their rooms so they could go to the
park.

​2. Under the weather
Meaning: Sick.
Example: I'm feeling under the weather and won't be able to go to school today.

​3. Better late than never


Meaning:Doing something late is better than not doing it at all.
Example: I went back to college after a long gap to complete my degree. Better late than
never.

​4. Cut corners
Meaning: To skip steps or not do things completely.
Example:” This is an important project so don't cut any corners .”our teacher said.

5. Get out of hand
Meaning: Go out of control.
Example: I meant to have a small party but too many people gatecrashed and things
got out of hand.

6. A snowball effect
Meaning:A situation in which one action or event causes many other similar actions or
events.
Example: The success of women in sports has had the snowball effect of bringing more
women into the field..

7. To cut someone some slack


Meaning: to make things slightly easier for someone than you normally would, because
of their special circumstances or situation.
Example.Since i was new at the job, my boss cut me some slack.
8. Step up one’s game
Meaning: To work harder or perform better.
Example:” You need to step up your game if you want a promotion this year,”my boss
said.
9. Your guess is as good as mine
Meaning: Something you say when you do not know the answer to a question
Example: “I haven't found out anything about the theft, so your guess is as good as
mine.”

10. Left out in the cold


Meaning: To be ignored
Example: Not being invited to any of the staff meetings left me feeling out in the cold.

11. Keep an ear to the ground


Meaning: To remain alert for new information.
Example:” I'll keep an ear to the ground for any updates on the project,”my colleague
said.

12. Up in arms
Meaning: To be angry and rebellious.
Example:The farmers were up in arms against the government.

13. Scrape the barrel


Meaning:To be forced to use one's last and weakest resource because nothing better is
available.
Example: "With all the best talent already taken, we had to scrape the bottom of the
barrel to find participants for the competition.

14. Blessing in disguise


Meaning: Something that seems bad but ultimately provides some benefit.
Example: I hated that assignment but it was a blessing in disguise since it taught me a
lot.

15. Rest on your laurels


Meaning:be so satisfied with what one has already done or achieved that one makes no
further effort.
Example: We could not rest on our laurels as we still had a match with the toughest
team.
