TOPIC 8 - RELATION AND FUNCTION

Relation: A set of ordered pairs. The set of all first coordinates is the domain of
the relation. The set of all second coordinates is the range of the relation
Domain and Range: The set of all the inputs and outputs a function can give
respectively. I.e., for any function y=f(x): the domain is the set of all x-values for
which f(x) is defined. The range is the set of all y-values that the function f(x)
produce

Three ways to represent a relation: Table, mapping, graphing

Function: Rule that pairs each element in one set called the domain, with
exactly one element from a second set called the range
Dependent Variables: One whose value relies on the other variable. As the
name suggests, its quantity is dependent on the other. It does not change on
their own, they change due to other factors.
Independent Variables: One whose value does not rely on the other variable. It
is a variable that does not depend on any other variable for its value
Ex: {(-2,-2),(3,0),(-2,-1),(3,1),(-3,2)} ← relation

Note: All functions are relations but not all relations are functions!!

TABLE

MAPPING
GRAPHING

Two types of Functions:

- One to one: A special function that maps every element of the range to
exactly one element of its domain, i.e, the outputs never repeat.
Ex:
Filipino → Ginoong Sonny
Math → Sir Dos
Soc Stud → Sir Essam
CLE → Sir Mike
- Many to one: A type of function that connects two or more elements of the
domain set with a single domain set x. and are connected to a single set y

TOPIC 9 - SLOPE OF A LINE

Slope: measure of the steepness of a line
Slope - m, ex: hill

- Slope is the ratio of the vertical change (rise) to the horizontal change
(run) between any two points on a line
If run moves right, value is positive
If run moves Left, value is negative
If rise moves up, value is positive
If rise moves down, value is negative
Rise / run = 3 / 3 = 1
M=1
