PARK RESCUE
A short time ago, the local park in Selwood looked terrible. The lake was polluted, seats were broken and the place
was full of rubbish.
But now all this has changed, thanks to Michael Chambers, a 16-year-old student. Six months ago, Michael
organised a group called Park Rescue, and this group has produced some amazing results.
Members have used their free time to clean the park. They’ve taken away tons of rubbish, and they’ve started to
clean the lake. They’ve mended a lot of seats and they’ve bought some new picnic tables. They’ve also planted
some flowers and 60 young trees.
Michael has talked about the project on the radio and he’s put articles in the local newspaper. In six months, about
120 people have joined Park Rescue. The group has organised concerts and they’ve collected money in the
streets. With these activities and with help of some local business people they’ve raised over 4000 pounds.
‘We haven’t finished the work,’ Michael says.’ We want to make a skateboarding area, and at the moment we need
some advice about cleaning the lake. But birds have started to come back to Selwood Park, and it’s becoming a
place that people can enjoy. The old café is going to open soon and that will be great.’
If you can help, contact Michael on 01623 449280 or at parkrescue@biglink.co.uk.

THINGS USED TO BE DIFFERENT
Lots of students have heard their grandparents say ‘things used to be different when I was young’. So how were
things different? What was their life like?
Life has changed in many ways in the last fifty years. When the grandparents of today’s teenagers were young,
they didn’t use to be free as young people are at present. After school they often had to help their parents in the
house because, fifty years ago, modern inventions like dishwashers and washing machines were not common.
Not all families had a television, so teenagers probably did more sport and spent more time outside with their
friends. Their contact with nature was closer and they were more familiar with different types of plants and animals.
Today many teenagers spend their free time on their mobile phone, listening to CDs, surfing the Internet or playing
computer games.
You may think life is better for the teenagers in the twenty-first century and, in many ways, it is. But maybe not
everything is better… Magazines are full of articles no how to look, what to wear, what to eat, what not to eat and
how to get a boyfriend/girlfriend. Teenagers want to have the ‘right’ music and have the newest mobile phone, so
it’s not surprising that they often feel stressed out…!
