One significant trend in Filipino culture today is the rise of K-pop or Korean popular culture.

1. WHAT MAKES THIS CULTURE MATTER TO OUR SOCIETY AS FILIPINO.


— K-dramas, K-pop boybands, K-pop girl group. K-pop has a massive following in the
Philippines, particularly among the youth. It serves as a form of entertainment, escapism,
and cultural exchange. It brings together Filipino fans through shared interests, fosters
creativity through dance covers and fan art, and introduces Filipinos to aspects of Korean
language and culture.

2. WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF THIS CULTURE.

— PROS:

 Cultural Exchange: It promotes cross-cultural understanding between Korea and the Philippines.
 Community Building: K-pop fandoms create tight-knit communities that offer support and
friendship.
 Creative Expression: Fans express their creativity through dance covers, fan fiction, fan art, and
more.
 Economic Impact: It boosts tourism, as fans travel to Korea and vice versa for concerts, fan
meetings, and cultural experiences.

— CONS:

 Obsession: Some fans may overly obsessed, leading to neglect of responsi bilities and even
financial issues.
 Unrealistic Standards: K-pop idols often set unrealistic beauty and body standards, leading to
self-esteem issues among fans.
 Language Barrier: While it exposes Filipinos to the Korean language, it may also lead to a
preference for Korean over their native language.
 Cultural Imperialism: There are concerns about the dominance of Korean culture overshadowing
local Filipino culture.
